Replacement Crankset
Background: I have a 2005 Gary Fisher Nirvana S. It has a Shimano Nexave crank-arm (FC-T303) with 28/38/48 rings. The bottom bracket is a Shimano UN54 68 x 118mm. I replaced the BB last year (old one was creaking) and the new one has about 200 miles on it.
Issue: Last winter I hit some black ice, back wheel went out from under me, and I landed on the drive side of the bike. There is now a subtle, yet noticeable, wobble during my pedaling motion. Questions: 1. I think I bent the drive side crank arm when I crashed. Is it also possible that I bent the bottom bracket? 2. Looking for suggestions on replacing the original crank. I notice that Amazon.com has a bunch of options ranging from $20-$40 which is right about what I'm willing to spend on this bike (it's my winter beater). Any specific recommendations would be really appreciated. |
I'm mainly interested in the Sugino Impel 150x (7/8 speed) or the Shimano Alivio cranksets. As far as I know, the Alivio M410 is 7/8 speed and the Alivio M430 is 9 speed. I know the Shimano non-series M443 at harriscyclery or cyclepath.ca has 48/36/26 chainrings. I believe the 36 in the middle and 26 are more compatible with either snow or having some weight in panniers on a backrack. I even got a Sugino Impel 150x with 42/34/24 to go along with an 11-32T cassette on a touring bike I want to complete this winter. The other touring bike project I want to complete in the future I have a Sugino XD 350 with 48/36/26. (I wanted to use that with Ultegra 8 speed bar-end shifters on Paul Thumbies.)
EDIT: Whoops, I totally forgot the 118mm bottom bracket length. I guess you could always take a peek at the specs before. Maybe one of the many Alivio models would be compatible. |
I have no triple crank suggestions, but I would replace crank first and assume bottom bracket is okay.
My FSA Vero crank last year developed a similar wobble as I wore out the original BB (Shimano UN27 (or is it 26?) x 122.5). I replaced the BB with a much shorter brand new IRD BB, and once installed, had the exact same wobble. Mine was visible in the chainring as it rotated. I assumed that I had either buggered the taper in use or had bent the spider. No crash to speak of, just wobble from use. |
