Dawes Discovery 501
Hi
I have recently bought my friends old (he thinks its a 2009) Dawes Discovery 501. I've never owned a hybrid bike before and want to use it to commute to and from work and also on weekend rides. So it will mainly be used on roads with some gravel paths, grass, etc thrown in, nohing too rough though.
My friend used to let his brother use the bike and he has left it damaged and didnt let my friend know. It needs the brake pads and cables and gear cables replacing and the back wheel (see pictures below). Other than that the bike is in good condition so am happy with it.
Can anybody recommend some half decent wheels and tires that wont break the bank? Any help is much appreciated.

Hey there CarvedMarble!,
There's several ways to approach this venture.
You can go to your nearest bicycle co-op and volunteer for a few components. Usually co-ops have a few spare wheels lying about. If they have tires, those will most probably be sold at a discounted rate.
You can also check various local bicycle shops. Sometimes they have old tires that they just really want to sell at a cheap price, just get them out of inventory.
Finally, you can just order some tires, tubes, or wheels, online.

For wheels, you need to know what size the rear hub is. It's either 130mm or 135 mm (size between locknuts/dropout spacing on the frame itself). And, how much do you weigh? If you don't weigh much over 200lbs, I bet the Forte titan rear wheel would work well, it has good reviews. That would leave you with a different wheel front and back, but that doesnt really matter except for looks. They also sell the front wheel to go with it and its on sale for $69.99, so you could have a wheelset for under $150, a good price!
Also check out Easton Vista Wheelset for $150. Apparently they are handbuilt by easton, which is a good thing, better than machine made. I don't know anything about the wheels though.
Tires there are a lot of choices. Check out the above link to biketiresdirect.com Once you find what you like, check e-bay, you can sometimes find 2-packs of tires for way less than you can buy them elsewhere!
The local bike shop is not a bad idea, either. Maybe they can replace your rim for you. That route could be cheaper than buying a new wheel, and the wheel would be hand built... Just a thought.
