Mountain Bike Hybrid Conversion
 

Hi All,

I'm new to this site even though I have been road biking and mountain biking for many years. I normally just buy a bike for which ever discipline i'm doing. however I have now got a whole load of road bike and mountain bike.

I would like to convert one of my Mountain bike to a hybrid, probably my cannondale F5 mountain bike, which is the newest I've bought. I no i can just buy some road tyres for the bike but I would really like to have the fell of a road bike with some nice hybrid rims and tyres.

I've had a good look around and to my surprise I can't find 26" disc wheels for a Hybrid. please can I have some suggestions on which wheels would fit my F5

I don't know how far you want to go money wise, but the first thing I'd do is lose that 11-34 cassette. Maybe tighten it up with a 12-26 or 12-23 pg950 or similar.

Do you intend to go narrower than 32mm for tires? I'm sure whatever rims you have now will work fine down to that.

Off the shelf, don't know what you'll find that will be substantially different weight wise than your current wheels. If you must, you could always go custom. Velocity offers several nice, low weight rims: Aerohead, Fusion, and AeroHEAT. Velocity does custom wheels, too. They could lace your choice of rim to one of their many hubsets with butted DT spokes. Many other builders, too.

Gearing, choice of tire, and locking out the fork will probably make the biggest difference.

There really aren't "hybrid specific" wheels out there to be honest. If you want disc wheels, try to find the narrowest 26" wheel you can find..otherwise, there are quite a few 26" road tires out there that work very well. Most hybrids, if not all have a 700c size wheel and may or may not fit on your frame/fork. Personally i think if you go with a 700x wheel, and a narrow tire like a 700x28-700x32, i think you will be ok. I would test fit first before you commit though. A cheap 29er disc wheel works btw for they are the same as a 700c wheel.
