Hey guys,

I plan on buying the Trek 7.2FX bike but Trek has just released its 2013 model. My question is, how long will it take for the LBS to markdown the 2012 models and how much do you think the discount will be?

I havent ridden in years and this will be my first real bike so Im pretty excited but I want to get a great bike & a great deal.

Not sure what part of the world you are from, but on the west coast of North America, it is still great riding weather. Unless you are hoping to get a substantial discount, I would just get the bike you want and start riding. My LBS was not discounting the 2012 bikes even though the 2013s were coming in. You may have to wait until 2013 to see bigger discounts.

If he has a 2012 in the store and you have the cash he might deal, make an offer.

The Trek FX line is too popular for the LBS worrying about them setting on the floor- especially the 7.3 and below.

i got my 7.2 right after thanksgiving .. and it was discounted $50

My guess would be that it depends on your location and the dealer. My father-in-law bought the 2013 7.2 in the beginning of June for $550. He bought his from a trek dealer in Ohio. One week later we bought my wife the 2012 women's design for $490 in Chicago.

Where are you? Depending on which bike shop you go to - they may do price matching, so it pays to shop around and ask. Since the 2013 models just came in to all dealers, they're probably trying to out-price one another.

With a 50% off the difference price matching at my LBS, I just bought a 2013 Trek FX 7.3 WSD for $30 below retail; it ended up being only $15 more than the 2012 version. I could've gotten $60 off retail at the store that had the lower price, but honestly their staff was horrible in trying to push me on a kid's bike when I really wanted a well tuned commuter with decent components and regular sized tires.

One of the 5 local bike stores I shopped at has equal pricing right now on the '12 and '13 Trek FX 7.2 models. Actually, at the time I write this, the '13 is $5 less than the '12.

On the 7.3 version that I bought, the difference is more noticeable in the usual way, with the '12 being $579.99 ($110 off original retail) and the '13 $620.99 ($69 off original retail).

I just bought a 2013 FX 7.2 in black today. Pick it up next weekend and I can't wait!
I talked sales the sales guy and he said the discounting of the previous year all depends on the left over inventory. I got the 2013 for $50 off due to their yearly sale (2012 were on sale too). The FX line is pretty popular and they move a lot of them at my LBS.

I would do as mac61 said and go in with cash in hand and start wheeling and dealing, if you dont get the price down on a 2012, you might get some accessories thrown in for free.

I agree with what others have said. You can always ask for a discount. Or, if there is something you like about the 2013 model, you can be the first kid on your block to own one of those. One thing to consider. A new model year does not necessarily mean it is better.
