Trek 7.4 vs 7.3: are the differences worth it?
I'm researching these 2 bikes (as well as others) to replace my old Trek 4500 mtb that was totalled. I find that I've been riding 90% street (although streets are in bad shape), and 10% hard pack trails, so I want something lighter and quicker, but with some cushioning. Don't think I really need front shocks however. For point of reference, I am 60 and in reasonable shape (I rode the NYC 5 Boro Bike Tour the last 2 years - on the Trek 4500).
In looking at the Trek 7.3 and 7.4 (as they seem to have the gearing and tire size that would work for me), the 7.4 has very few upgrades for about a hundred dollars difference, and I'm not sure if these upgrades are worth it. The most important difference is the carbon fork on the 7.4, that I understand has some shock absorbing qualities as well as weight reduction. The only other real difference is that it has one additional (lower) gear. There also has to be a weight difference, but actual weights are difficult to find. So I am eliciting opinions: would these differences be worth about a hundred bucks (or maybe a little less with sales)? Does anybody know the real weight difference between these 2 models? Thanks in advance! Frank |
So for an extra $110, you're getting a carbon fork and a 9 speed instead of an 8 speed. I'll take that upgrade any day of the week, because the alternative would be to remain stuck with an aluminum alloyed fork...No thanks!

I agree with SlimRider. 9 spd and carbon fork are more than worth it. Full disclosure, I have a 2012 7.4.

when i bought my specialized sirrus elite, i could really tell the difference between the elite with the carbon fork and the sport with the aluminum fork, much smoother ride.

It's absolutely worth the measley $110 bucks. The ride quality is so much nicer. In fact, each level up rides smoother and better. Get the highest level you can afford, it's cheaper than upgrading later.

I recently bought 2013 Trek 7.4 FX ; I like it so far for my 25 mile round trip commute..
