2012 Trek DS 8.2 crankset problem
 

I bought a new 8.2 at the LBS and after a few months couldn't shift into the largest front gear.
I brought it in for a tuneup and the tech there said the crankset was loose and had moved outward far enough to not shift to the outermost sproket.
He said I had messed with the crankset to cause the problem. When I said I didn't he said then one of my friends had worked on it and messed it up. I said I keep the bike inside my apartment and no friends had access to it.
Then he said a friend must have snuck inside at night to play a joke
on me because thats the only way it could have gotten loose. He said there was no way they
caused it when assembling it cause they are pros with 30 yrs experience.

They did fix it for no charge over the weekend so I call it a win. I wonder though what cause this problem.

It happens, but what I would be more concerned about is the attitude of the person that waited on you at your local bike shop.
It's good that they fixed it for no charge, but they should have done it without all the finger pointing. I would let the management know about it, and depending on the response I would look for another shop that is customer friendly.

I probably would not go back to that bike shop. My guys are much nicer about things like this. When they mess up they admit it (even if they might not really think they did; i.e., the customer is always right attitude)...and more importantly, they tell me about when they screw up even if they have already fixed the problem and I would never have known (just in case there is a problem down the road). Hopefully you can find some guys that are a little more customer friendly in your area. It's one of the reasons I went with Giant over Trek...my local Giant shop provides better customer service.

Sometimes, when you deal with folks that consider themselves, Professional's, you have to become asscertive. My LBS is GREAT but there have been times that they've checked out a problem and couldn't find an answer, I kept on them, nicely letting them know, I wasn't happy with their judgement and they kept working and we've found the problem and it was fixed to keep me happy. IF, I got that type of attitude from a shop, I kindly let them know that I could buy my bicycle from "any of the MANY" shops in town or get my repair work done or spend my accessiores monies at any of them. That's only happen once and it's not happened again! If you live with a bicycle long enough you really get to know, when there's something, Not Quite Right with it, sometimes it takes more than a "quick" adjustment to find a problem and with the "pressure" on a line mech. (tech, whatever), to get "bikes in and out of service asap", Now you don't have to be an A$$hole but, you have to stand your ground.

Obviously he is not as good a professional as he thinks he is -- because he was obviously wrong on this one (you didn't do it!)

i am NOT a professional nor am I even a mechanic -- but I am betting that they forgot to torque down the crankset when they assembled it.

Actually, I had a similar problem: my LBS greased and rebuilt my bottom bracket and few weeks later I started hearing random clunks come out of it. I took it back and they tightened it up and its been fine since...

If you have Redsheild, then you can take it to ANY Trek Dealer. THe dude sounds like an ASS. I wouldn't go back to him..and for the record, BIKE SHOPS SCREW UP ALL THE TIME. The good ones at least admit to it and fix it.

I was thinking that too. Now I have a broken rear spoke and the rear cog shifts gears on its own. I was thinking of going back there and see how they handle the repair this time. I do get a year of free tuneups with them. I don't know if I can go to any Trek dealer for that. This shop carries the name Trek Bicycle store. Another lbs closer to me just sells Trek bikes.

Remind him next time he`s a smart arse that it`s only alloy, grease and bearings down there, and go elsewhere. Better yet, just buy a bike tool kit (they aren`t expensive) and fix it your self. A `professional` :rolleyes: is not needed.

Redshield is covered by any TREK dealer. The shifting will be part of the tuning, but if you broke a spoke, more than likely you will have to buy a spoke and have them install it.

I went to a different shop to get my rear spoke replaced for $25.
I will go to a different shop inthe future.
