You are correct.... Sidewall stamped max pressures means exactly what it says the max pressure & the minimum pressure ratings for that specific brand tire. That means if it says 120 max that is what you can run safely it does not mean at that exact point is were the tire blows of the rim. Most folks find a little less than the max recommended pressure is best some like 5lbs some like 10lbs less & others like diffrent pressures for there own personal reasons. Tandem riders & heavy loaded Touring riders run max pressures allot due to weight. Some Tandem riders run above max with no issues (this does not mean it's ok to exceed recommended tire pressues but some do) they exceed them do to team weights say being around 300lbs + bike weight. On our Tandem I run right at max but not over & have done so for years.
