hybrid upgrade
 

so I have a 3x8 hybrid, and was realizing this afternoon that my 2001 stumpjumper FSR that I never ride is a 3x9 deore... has much nicer shifters than the cheap tourney stuff on my hybrid....

would I be insane for stripping it of its shifters, derailleur, and swapping them onto my hybrid, along with an appropriate 9 speed cassette? I'd probably end up putting some alivio grade 8 speed stuff on the mountain bike frame then offing it. brakes would be an issue, the mountain bike has hydraulic disks, so I'll need new brake levers for my hybrid as it has all in one shifter+brakelever junk.

I'd just leave the mountain bike intact.
You can find the the combined brake/shifter for about the same price as the shifters alone if you just spend a few days watching online prices. They seem to vary considerably over a few days time IME.

I did the same upgrade to my 2008 Specialized Globe. Not the most cost effective for one more gear, but I do use the extra gear.
Part of the reason I changed was that gawd awful 11-32 cassette that was on it and my flat terrain. I needed to change to more of a "road" cassette, so since I needed a new cassette anyway, I just took the plunge.

i've already swapped that silly 11-32 for a 13-26 8-speed, heh. that only cost like $20 or something.

most all the current deore stuff is 10 speed, and I don't want 10-speed, 9 is fine.

btw, the bike is a 2010 globe, hah!

if you like disc brakes, see if it is feasible to swap the wheel hubs and put the disc's on the hybrid. the downside is you need to build up 4 wheels but the upside is zero $ if the swap is feasible.

the hybrid's frame has disk mounts, but it's forks don't. anyways, I'm fine with v-brakes on a street bike, I'd as soon leave the hydraulics on the stumpie. I'd just get some seperate flatbar longpull brake levers for the hybrid

also the stumpie doesn't have canti/vbrake bosses.

planning to eventually replace the wheels on my hybrid, deore-or-so hubs, 36H in the rear at least, and Dyad or similar rims.


nah, its probably simpler to leave the stumpie alone (and sell it) and just score some 9-speed shifters and derailleurs if I did this, I realize that. my crank is already 9-speed compatible, my front derailleur is tourney grade junk which I wanna replace anyways.

You don't need to replace the DER's.
I'm using a Tourney for the RDER on my 86 Rockhopper and it shifts 9 gears fine. It's just a matter of having it set up right.

Swap that 9-speed stuff over, man. No need to let good parts sit on a bike that's barely ridden...
