QQ sirrus comp vs elite

Hi all

Sorry..another boring question.
Is Sirrus comp worth to pay extra $200 than sirrus elite?
Upgraded derailleur and breaks.
I am not a serious bike rider, only for commuting instead of current mtb.
But I liked the color of comp ...

Thanks

'worth' is in the eye of the beholder.

+1 on that, if your questioning which one to buy ? You want the comp. :) One is a 10 speed & the other a 9, plus they have different fork's. I think. Late for work, buy the one you want or you will always say I should have.:thumb:

Yep, what he said...... but ck for things! Like can I gobigger tires, fenders, racks?

Makes a difference down the road.

badger1 03-20-13 07:35 AM

Assuming 2013 model year, same frame (E5), same fork (carbon/alu. steerer), same wheels. Both have mounts for fenders, racks (front as well as rear, iirc).
Difference is in the drivetrain; significantly better (and will be easier to source replacement parts as needed) on the Comp. Would be worth it to me, provided there's not too much price difference in Japan.

By the way, tire clearance on the current Sirrus is pretty good; you should easily be able to use anything up to 35 width without any issue. Given the riding use/conditions you describe in your other thread, I can't imagine why you'd want anything "wider".

Also by the way, I wouldn't let discs be a deciding factor (e.g. between Sirrus and Bad Boy) -- again, given where you ride/what you use the bike for. I use a 2010 Sirrus Comp for 3+ season commuting, and long weekend road rides here in Southwestern Ontario; we can have harsh weather conditions, and we do have very poor roads, heavy traffic, etc. I've never felt the v-brakes to be compromised in relation to my other, disc-equipped bike that I used for the same purposes 2005-2010.

Hi Badger1, thank you so much for your insightful comment, which helped me a lot.
Yes, I agree discs shouldn't be necessary especially for my riding condition.
You're correct, I personally look for wider tire. that's why I considered cannondale bad boy 29er (which is available in Japan with schewalbe 29 x 2" big apple tire).

As you've already read my another thread, may I kindly ask your another insightful comment to that thread as well?
It's basically about my indecisive among, bad boy 29er/9, sirrus elite/comp.
I'm slightly leaning toward between bad boy 9 and sirrus comp. However, 29er's wider tire and sirrus elite's price bug me as well hahaha

btw, I had test ride on 29er and sirrus sport only so far. it's very hard to find BB9 and 2013 comp around my area.
29er was very comfortable and faster than expected (only 10 min test ride can't guarantee though), but it may not be able to make much different from my ex-MTB bike.
Sirrus was very light and easy-fowarding, but a little too simple/general one another bike feeling.

Anyway, thank you very much for comment, and it would be highly appreciated if you could shed some light on my another thread as well. (BB 29er/9, sirrus elite/comp)

Thanks!

You're most welcome; don't know about 'insightful' -- just my thoughts based on my own experience/preferences. These may or may not apply to you!
In any event, I'll try to respond to your further questions with a more general view, based on reading your two threads.

To my mind, all four bikes you are considering (BB9/29er, Sirrus Elite/Comp) would serve you very well given (as I said above) your riding conditions and intended use. The Sirrus Sport you tested, while good for checking geometry/fit of "Sirrus", is a level below the Elite/Comp (very different frame/fork materials), so I exclude it here. Choosing between the four, then, really comes down to which one(s) you prefer the look/fit/feel (and price!) of; there's no clear answer anyone here can give you.

I've given my take above re. the two Sirrus models; I'd group the BB9 with those, and consider the BB29er separately. If it were me choosing, I wouldn't go with the latter because it's overbuilt for my intended use(s): I've no intention of going seriously off-road, and I don't need/want the frame clearance for 2+inch tires (knobby or slick). I understand the appeal of very wide road tires to certain cyclists, but while I like the idea of low-pressure comfort I'm not willing to pay the inevitable rotating weight penalty. I'm happy with 25mm Conti GP4000s in summer, and 32mm Panaracer Pasela TGs (folding) in spring/fall and when riding unpaved surfaces. I find both sufficiently comfortable/shock absorbing given a high-quality frame/fork, and find both to be light/quick-handling -- qualities I like. Your tastes may differ! Good luck with your choice!

Thanks again badger1.
Yes, I know how silly to ask other to choose bike I will ride. Different preference, different geometry, different height/weight etc. :)
The problem is I don't know much experience or sense to fill the difference. Honestly I don't know what's the perfect fit of geometry even I sit on various bikes - simply lack of experience. Thus I posted

Your comment and thought were much appreciated and very helpful to understand how I should approach the bikes.
Today I visited specialized concept shop in Tokyo, but no luck. They don't offer any test riding of any sirrus series which was quite disappointed.

So far, BB9 and elite are more less same grade.
After talking with specialized staff today and reading your previous comment, I concluded that sirrus comp is better or worthy to pay extra.
Thus, Sirrus comp beats (BB9 and elite)
Then now I have only 2 options left - either sirrus comp or BB 29er (price is more or less same)
I understand it's now all up to my personal preference.
29er - heavy but comfortable feeling
Comp - very light and great drivetrain (over-spec to me) and good chance to try thin tires.
hmmmmm while writing this reply, I realized I should go with Comp then hahaha
Once I buy one, will update this thread :)

Thanks badger1

ah...tragedy
Just found out a store started to offer 30% for Bad Boy 5 2013 model (solo rigid folk). It becomes slightly less expensive than Comp.
It seems like my final task. Bad Boy 5 2013 vs Sirrus Comp.
Spec-wise, still comp is better. But buying originally $1100 worth bike with 30% off seems good chance as well.
hmmmmm

pierce 03-21-13 11:34 AM

I am not a big fan of those single sided forks... C-Dale always has to do things a little weird, for no particularly good reason.

Wanderer 03-21-13 12:47 PM

But, you now have a big bargaining chip, at the Specialized dealer.........

Phillyfan 03-22-13 07:21 PM

Can't speak to the BB9 but I have a Sirrus Comp and love it

whoishj 03-23-13 07:31 AM

Thanks for all the comments
Now only 2 clear options
Sirrus comp at 800 USD
Bad boy 9 at 550 USD
(In fact it's Japanese yen but made it simpler..)
I know sirrus has better components thus expensive.
But 30% off is very good deal for bb9.

I will buy either one of them next Monday ...
:)

Wanderer 03-23-13 12:39 PM

That single sided fork, may limit resale. Buy the one that you like the best. I'd certainly try to talk the Specialized dealer down, to get close to the Cannondale. Good luck.

whoishj 03-29-13 07:28 AM

Thanks for all the comments. Finally my Sirrus comp 2013 on my hand :)
To make long story short, I decided sirrus comp, but when I went to LBS they said it's sold out in whole japan.
Next day I immediately called another LBS selling 30% off bad boy. Answer was all of my size (L) were already sold out.
I was totally upset on my indecisiveness for a while.
Then I called Specialized concept shop where I saw sirrus comp couple of days ago.
Interestingly they still had stock. and I immediately bought it :) (with 10% off!)

Changed break to shimano.

Thanks for helping!

Wanderer 03-29-13 10:29 AM
