700c Off Road Tires

I have a Trek 8.3 DS that came with Bontrager H5 700c x 38 tires. I recently moved to a new area where most of my riding will be off road dirt trails. Mostly hard packed with hills and occasionally loose dirt/sand. The H5's slip a lot on climbs and don't have much traction. Does anyone have any reccomendations on some better tires that will fit my bike?

How much of your usage will be on a gravel or paved road and how much on trails? How often are the trails damp when you ride?

I enjoy trails near Chicago, where do you ride?

Consider these two;

I actually moved to Amarillo, TX recently and will be riding mostly in the Palo Duro Canyon. I would say 70% dirt trails and 30% pavement. Would like something that can help me keep up with friends with mountain bikes but still keep the versatility of my DS.

Ahhh...

I would consider a small block knobby: https://www.kendausa.com/en/home/bicy...slant-six.aspx

Do you have goatheads, thorns and other hazards to deal with? This knobby has effective flat protection;

I appreciate the suggestions. Do you think a narrower 35 would be okay? Looks like those last two don't come any wider.

Yes, I would expect both Kendra & Schwalbe to be about the same size as your existing tire. Kendra and Schwable run larger than many brands.

Do you want a larger tire? How much room do you have to spare with your current tire?

If you want a slightly larger tire, this should fit: https://clementcycling.com/xplor-mso

I'd prefer the same size or maybe a little larger. I have some room to spare with the 38's. I'm leaning towards the Kenda Happy Medium in 700x40.

Yes, I have this tire on my Cyclocross bike. It provides very good traction on semi-soft dry dirt. They work well with 35 to 50 psi and it is a faster rolling tire than the Slant Six. the 700x40 will be 3 to 4mm wider than your current tire. Mine is a 700x32 but is 34mm wide.

Good to know that they are good on the Katy Trail (is that near Defiance?) as I ride my touring bike on it quite a lot. I also ride the touring bike on the road. How are those tires on paved surfaces?

Hi Jerry,

That point is about half-way between Defiance and St Charles, about a mile east of I64.

My Happy Mediums are still new and don't roll as well as a high performance slick, like a Vittoria Hyper, on pavement. They are more like a touring tire, in terms rolling resistance. They might improve with age: I predict that the tiny diamond knobs at the center of the tread will be worn off in about 700 miles, then it should roll like a slick ;-)

The tire is supple with a good quality ride. It's 120 TPI.

My friend swears by these. Maybe drop by the Trek shop and ask them if they'll fit your frame. I think he runs 29 x 2.35 at the front and 29 x 2.2 at the back.

I think the Happy Mediums will suit me. Not sure if the 40s will be too big though. Might go with the 35s if they run big and should be about the same as my current 38s. LBS doesn't stock them so ill have to order online.

If most of your riding is off road, Bontrager LT-3's in 700 x 38. I thought that is what came on the DS-3.

I've had good experiences with Specialized Crossroads. Ride decent on the street,do well in snow. Zero flats with the regular FlakJackets,reflective sidewalls are optional. I think the only 700 size is 38mm.

I'd imagine something like these would work:

I think they do now but last year they came with the H5's. I was looking at those but I've read really mixed reviews on them, most people saying they're okay for now but they're going to upgrade after they wear. Still researching all the suggestions. I appreciate the help!

Well that opens up the possibilities!

Consider these: https://www.bgcycles.com/rock-n-road-tire.html

re: figuring out what might fit... take what you have now, determine what part of the frame is the closest to the tire sidewalls... its usually the chain stays... if your tire is X mm wide, and you have N mm of space on either side, a tire that was X+N*2 wide would be rubbing. I'd suggest allowing at least 3mm on all sides of the tire... so if you have 38mm tires now and there's 6mm on each side, you can probably go 2*3mm wider, or 38+6 == 44mm

this gets thrown off by A) tire width variances (many tires are 1 or 2mm wider or narrower than they claim to be), and you need some clearance to allow for frame, wheel, and tire flex under cornering loads. and of course your rim width.
