My old Trek hybrid 730

Howdy everyone. New to the forums, but not biking. I rode a lot less in the last decade or so due to family and a busy life. Was a pretty hard rider back in the day and started MTB riding on road bikes in the 80's. I was never a huge road bike guy and often built all kinds of my own cross bikes.
Having owned a Trek 750 for a short period in the 90's and loving the ride I decided to pick up a used one for a build. This bike (a 730) was kept in great condition and all original when I found it. Paid $40.
I live on Long Island and have ridden off-road since the days of no dedicated trails. I built this as my all-rounder for riding to and from the trails as well as on the trails and anywhere else on the island, even the beach if I walk it down to the pack. I love this bike and can easily do 50 miles of mixed riding. It can handle any trail around here even though I get some strange looks form the big suspension bike guys.

Nice old Trek, I have a 720, that is in nice shape too, great old bike. I am upgrading to some better stuff on it now to make it more comfortable for longer rides.

My first bike was a 1995 Trek 730 (my dad currently has it) and I bought another one about two years ago. Great bikes! I've moved on to a more road-oriented steel hybrid that fits my handling preferences more but I'll never sell either of the Treks.

maybe I should hang on to my son's Multitrack 750 instead of selling it to help recoup the cost of his new/used 7.1 FX ...

I just came across your post. Looks great; I have been wondering about drop bars on my Trek 730, the same dark green by the way, and I like your install. Did you get a quill/threaded adaptor for the stem? And how large are those tires. I'm running 32s with fenders, but I'd like to run larger for some dirt/gravel road stuff.

I put on the Nitto quill adaptor, pretty stout and gives you a couple of inches to adjust. I bought a riser adaptor also but did not need it. The tires are 48's. I was going to get 45's and had measured for them but while at the LBS a guy was buying a high end race MTB and insisted on "real" off-road tires. So they swapped these Bontrager ZR1's for much cheaper knobbies. I sucked up the ZR1's for $50 for the set. They are extremely fast, work great for the mixed road/terrain I ride and have been surprisingly durable. The front can wash out in loose over pack conditions but very predictably and easy to control. They just fit though, and I had to move the front derailleur and tiny bit.

I have a Trek 720 too and love it. When I want a comfortable ride, carry some gear, for some long distances, I choose the Trek 720 every time. I want to enjoy the ride; I don't care about fast, I want to see what is going by me along the way.
