Bike for commuting - Novice :Vitus vee / 27 / Giant Defy 4 or Escape M2 /Canondale
Hi ,
Really interesting to read so much information and support in your forum .
I decided to jump in riding a bike - I will need it to ride daily 3-4 miles couple a times a day, in town, mostly on the road but sometimes in park/across pavement and looking to do it more rarely outside the town -both on the roads and slight tracks.
i will be looking to be fast / not needing often repair (have done it in the past with old road bike-my dad's ) /sturdy to some degree .

I know that this examples that I have given in the title a quite different but I am looking for advise - from the range of road bike sturdy enough for town/occasional off road to hybrid type bike .

I could find a Cannondale Synapse 8 2300 Triple 2013 and Cannondale CAAD8 2300 2013 Compact - for 500 and I like how they look but I can't found them except online .
I like the simplicity of Vitus Vee/Dee/29 although this is simple speed(much difference on the roads?) type and slightly heavier ,probably.(
I found reduced price - again online - Giant Defy 4 and read good things about Giant Escape M2( cheaper -300 ) (

What will be your initial advise if I can't test them ?

Buy something you can test. The only way to know for sure how a bike will fit and how it rides is to get in the saddle.

Any shops in your area? What do they carry?

I could find a Ridgeback - they proposed Velocity 15'' slightly shorter ( not aviable straight now ) around 350 , they have as well Ridgeback Flight for around 500-600 .
I am still considering but either single speed bike like Vitus or going up to Cannondale ....
I will look around for more choice even second handed . Any comments on Velocity by the way ?

Otaka, I just purchased my hybrid for the same conditions you described and I think you should be able to find it at a reasonable price if it interests you. It's a BMC Alpenchallenge AC01 as seen here at Ryan's Cycles but check around for lower prices. I got mine for 500 here in Sweden.

Thanks Canadiandude ,

BMC Allpenchalenge also looks interesting , but the price goes up to 800 and I am not sure i will have a chance to try it somewhere near by .
I heard Sweden is a very nice place as well :)
I found a interesting 2nd hand shop to check what they have for my size and to try it...
I haven't been on bike for so long that I wonder if not every bike feels almost the same - slightly akward - before riding it for more than a hour ..?
Other options is Halfords but ....
