New Bike - make it my own

I have been reading and see that you guys (and gals)in the bike community are very proud of your rides. I like the styling of my first bike but the all black is kinda plain. What additions are allowable to personalize it and add a splash of color? I don't want to do anything to make me look more like a noob than I already do. (I wanted a kickstand but figured out right away that was a cardinal sin).

Water bottle cage(s), bright colored if you prefer. Lights come in all shapes and colors.

I use kick stands on both my bikes.
I find it pretty irritating when someone parks their bike next to mine and it "flops" entangling itself in mine.

+1 on kickstand. I would put one on my road bike but all the ones I've tried interfere with my feet when riding. Also tires, grips/bar tape, and saddle. You can get some crazy colored tires or bar tape and a funky saddle.

For colour, I now believe minimal is best. An example of my preference would be to only use colour on bolts, (not on the chainring bolts unless you're using a single or double chain ring) On a black frame,I prefer red, but that combination is far too obvious, so maybe a midnight blue. Maybe coloured skewers, but I personally prefer the standard shimano or campag design, which only come in black or silver.

Further to personalizing it, change some of the OEM bits like stem, bars and seat post, to something a bit higher up the scale. The would also recommend a bar which is not black, maybe brown (?)

These are only my views, and others undoubtedly disagree.

Hello. Off the top of my head, here are a few "rules" of bicycle setup regarding style I have picked up over the years. Colors and fads come and go but these are basics. Im the first one to break these rules, but ideally:

Match the grips, saddle, and tires. Brand and color
Match the seatpost, stem, and handlebars
Match the swekers with the seat pin, make sure theyre not pointing down
If you have a black stem and seatpost, run a black crank. If silver, run silver. Match brake calipers with
Align the logo of the tire with the valve. If the colors of the tires and wheels work well, bonus points

Im sure theres a bunch more that others can list....

Mudguards & a rear rack can be silver colored.. then your bags will have space to pick a motif.

Ergon's grips are super, and come in a bio-cork option.

Kool stop has salmon colored brake pads , that work great .

Personally I'd play off the white the bike already has, like using the grips pictured above. Maybe a white saddle, white seatpost collar, some black and white tires, and can always change the cable colors as well.

Do what you think looks cool. Its a rather costly thing to try to impress others and in the end its your bike.

+1 on the Kool Stop salmon pads and the colored housing. I'd dearly love a pair of the VO or Honjo hammered fenders but they won't fit my bike. If you're going with a silver rack then I'd say get the aluminum otherwise check out the brass. Either would look great on your bike. Please please please if you're going to go with blue bar tape, don't get the one the color of painter's tape. Otherwise, have fun!

The extra white add on's look fantastic on your bike.

Those white Ergon grips are a particularly impressive looking on your bike.

I put some gold touches on my bike. Seat post, pedals, headset spacers, valve caps, and stem head cap. And I wouldn't have a bike without a kickstand. I also put a sticker on the front of my bike, yes, a middle aged man with stickers on his bike.
