New guy here. A few weeks back I bought a 2015 Trek 8.4 DS. I'm just getting into cycling to work on some weight loss. I went with the 19 inch frame. The only change I made was swapping out the stock saddle for a WTB Speed V ProGel. Here is a pic prior to the saddle change. I love this bike.

Regarding the fork recall, after holding my bike for over six weeks my LBS called to tell me it turns out my fork is not subject to recall. I picked it up yesterday afternoon with the original fork. Has anyone else had this experience?

It seems to me that Trek is really dropping the ball on this recall. I have emailed customer service twice and warranty once. Also left a voicemail on their hard to find phone number. I have not heard a thing from them. It is amazing the total lack of support from Trek. I keep getting more disgusted with this company. They should not treat any customer this way. Shame on them!!!

I just got an email reply from TREK Customer support. There is a long back order on the forks. From their CS:
"Your claim is currently on backorder. The white forks are on backorder until sometime in mid to late October. We do have gloss black forks available now if you would like to switch it to that to get riding once again. The forks we have available are the only forks we could get in a timeline to make this recall go as smoothly as possible without making our customers wait 3+ months for replacement forks."
Trouble is, I've been waiting since the end of July, so it will be four months. When I replied with this (I asked why TREK couldn't use the forks from their 2014/15 model line of DS, which is the same as the recalled ones), he said
"That is the unfortunate situation we are in currently. We are buying as many forks as we can to take care of it as quickly as possible but there are only so many we can get our hands on. "
I'm thinking of buying a third party fork. Any recommendations??
Thanks

At least you heard from them. They have been ignoring me. I need a black remote lockout fork. I wonder what the timeline is for that? Trek should be doing something more proactive on this. They could offer an incentive to buy other forks instead of waiting 3 months. I spent over $1300 for a bike that i haven't seen in 6 weeks and don't know how much longer it will be. I have the feeling that when I do finally get the bike back it will be just an apology for the trouble. They should come up with something else. I think there are a lot of mad Trek owners out there.....

Sounds like you called the wrong number. I called their headquarters in Waterloo and got an operator who sent me to customer serivce and they were very helpful. (For an unrelated issue)

I'd be upset with Suntour. It's their fork that failed and they're the ones refusing the honor the recall. Sorry, wish you had your bike back.

That's a good idea about buying a third party fork. I looked on Amazon and only found one 63mm travel fork and it was over $400, but it was electric. Go figure. I would be open to suggestions for a replacement fork.

Wow what horror stories I'm reading about this recall. When I dropped off my bike on Friday at my LBS, one of the guys did say if they had the forks on a bike in stock, they will swap them onto mine. Which would be totally cool with me. Let's see.

I am very curious about this too. Do you have the Suntour NRX forks? When did you purchase your bike? I'm just asking because I just found out about this today(Sunday) and am very concerned my DS 8.4 is affected. I just purchased mine in June and it has the NRX forks. I am not sure if I have a 2013 or 2014. I'm wondering if all the NRX forks are being recalled?

Recall info

I was contacted via email & snail mail regarding this recall, this is part of the original message. When I got the notice I immediately checked the serial numbers on both bikes to see if they ended in F, G or H. Good luck!

AFFECTED MODELS
Only specific bicycles from model years 2011, 2012, and 2013 are affected. These bicycles may have serial numbers ending in F, G, or H. Your local retailer can assist you in determining if your specific fork is subject to the recall.

Thank you for your recent purchase of a Trek bicycle. Our records indicate you purchased one of the following models equipped with an SR Suntour NRX suspension fork (both standard and WSD models are affected):

2011 Montare
2011 Utopia
2012 8.4 DS
2012 8.5 DS
2012 Neko SL
2013 8.4 DS
2013 8.5 DS
2013 8.6 DS
2013 Neko SL

A number of these bicycles were made with an SR Suntour suspension fork on which the fork dropouts can break. The fork is model NRX and has IS mounts. If a dropout breaks, the rider could lose control of the bicycle.

I replaced the fork on my 2013 DS 3 with a carbon fork from Niner. Since I have no plans to go back to a suspension fork, I have the original fork which was not recalled. I would be willing to work something out if it would help get one of you guys riding. I planned to make the fork swap when I ordered the bike so the fork is like new and gathering dust in the shop.

Looks like I lucked out. My DS 8.4 is not part of the recall. It seems there are 2 versions of this NRX fork: 1 with post mounts and 1 with IS mounts. The ones with post mounts are not part of the recall. Strange Trek would have 2 different kinds of mounts on the same bikes from the same company. Anyway mine has the post mounts.

@AFHokie, what's the last letter on your serial number and does it have post or IS brake connectors?

Of course the question is why did your LBS have to hold it for 6 weeks to find out it didn't qualify !?!

My bike's serial number ends with a G. As far as I can tell mine has post mounts for the brakes instead of IS. LBS should've been able to discern the difference before holding it for six weeks.

Mmm, from the recall notice currently on the web site "The fork is model NRX and has IS mounts ".

Don't know if that was always there or not

Again, not sure why it takes a bike shop 6 weeks to realize it DOESN'T have IS mounts ( unless the recall notice changed recently from when it first came out to include the IS specification)

No not the thickness of the handlebars but the width/length from one end to the other.

OK...this keeps getting better....i called my LBS and told them about the mounts and i asked what mine was...he asked where i heard about this and I said on a Trek DS bike forum....he said not to believe what you read ion bike forums and that my bike was indeed recalled....I then called Trek and spoke with their support...turns out they got a warranty claim on Aug 19 with pics and they determined my bike was not subject to recall!!!...what a shock...I called the LBS and spoke with the owner and by this time I was beyond furious...he played dumb and said one of his employees was handling recalls and would call me when he gets in around 2...so I am waiting for this numbskull to call...meanwhile I just get more mad....why did it take them 5 week to submit a claim?....they should have checked the mount and known from the start it was not recalled....I thought this was a good LBS but my opinion is rapidly changing
