Trek: different colors in different countries. WHY?
 

I'm interested in seeing a "signature green" 7.4 FX, but it seems it's not available in the US. We get brown (sepia) and black (& blue). Boring colors if you ask me. ;) Do I have to order from overseas to even SEE this color in person?

I looked up my older Trek FX and the colors come up as "burnt orange" and "matte black chrome". Have not found any mention of the color that I have. Also from a recent interaction is Trek technical support/customer service: "A FX in the US could also weigh more than an FX in the UK because of different part spec. In the end, if we said a 7.1 FX weighed 19 pounds, it wouldn’t be true for all models, in every size, all over the world."

I wonder if they research the market to see what colors will work in the various countries.

Thanks, yashinon. I have a message in to them to find out if it's available in the U.S. My guess is that it's not, but who knows. ;) I'll keep you posted.

The answer to the question in the subject is... marketing. They import to the various countries what they think will sell best.

It would be great if the bike manufacturers had a wider variety of colors, but at least they rotate in a new color or two every year (although certain colors do stick around and/or are only slightly tweaked). It would be nice if there was more variety, but then I suspect that each bike shop would need to decide which color(s) to stock anyway, so it wouldn't make a real difference.

I'd love to see a PROJECT ONE option for a 7.7

Trek got back with me and said they would see what the nearest warehouse to me has in stock. Am I wrong that green isn't available in the States?

Contacting the manufacturer is worth a try. I think it is marketing also. Just like everything else. These things are researched to the hilt.

the whole world does not get their Trek Bikes thru Wisconsin .. the contract factory ships them from there .. TW ROC.

Yes, exactly. To stock all colors Trek would have to produce a lot more bikes and run the very real risk of their unsold inventory getting much bigger. The original poster should call Trek directly and ask if other colors can be special ordered.

I don't see why a shop could stock a couple colors, then special order a couple if a customer wanted. That way nobody has to be out money by stocking four or five colors in all sizes. Anyway, as I stated a couple days ago, I *did* contact Trek. They said they would check with the nearest warehouse to see what they have in stock. And, I still don't understand this since green isn't available in the U.S. according to their website. How could any warehouse in the States have green?

Looks like I would have to order from another country….which I'm willing to do, would just like to see the color in person first.

Premium priced Madones may be made in some color choices ..

Regarding your first point it is still a problem of the cost-to-carry an inventory of all combinations available to all locations.

Hopefully your call to Trek will reveal a not well kept secret for international companies like Trek. Their country-based websites don't always list all combinations and models. If that doesn't work check dealers in Canada. A nice long weekend drive to Canada could net you a green bike.

Lets us know what happens.

Ve also noticed color segmentation between the cheap bikes and the high end bikes...the more money you spend, the cooler the paint job is. Kind of frustrating.

Looks like Canada has the same limited color choices as the U.S.

And Mexico only gets the FX 7.1 - 7.3!

Ive heard of some local shops being able to order from other countries. If you find one, let me know, I'd love the green 7.4 also in a size 20

I think his comment means despite the fact that Trek is headquartered in Wisconsin, their bikes are built in and shipped from Taiwan.

Doesn't Trek still build higher end bikes in the USA? I would love to see all their bikes made in the USA!

That's probably true. I don't think the FX models fall into that category, though.

It's a well known fact that many people will buy a product that is the colour they like. Even if they rationally know the other product, of a colour they are not thrilled with, is superior. I've often wondered what was with bicycle manufacturers only having one or two stock colours available. They're losing business this way.

I live in Japan, so I was able to buy a Trek FX 7.4 in signature green recently. It's a great color, and it's definitely nice that we have so many color choices here. If I'm not mistaken, the 7.3 isn't available in Japan. I think we basically get fewer models, but more colors.

Hope you track one down. If not, I think this bike looks good in all the colors.

Looks like I'll have to order from another country. Trek got back with me with the stock answer of "black & sepia available as website states". That's just crazy. They make it in green. Now to look in to ordering. :rolleyes:
