How much faster will I be switching from a Schwinn Sidewinder to a Schwinn Dual Sport

The Sidewinder is a 39lb mountain bike with 26"X1.95" tires, the Dual Sport is a 7.5lb Hybrid with 700Cx38mm tires.

In the summer I routinely ride 16-100 miles daily (35 miles on average) with an average speed of 12mph according to my bell dashboard 100

no1mad 09-27-14 12:28 PM

I think you're missing a digit in that Dual Sport weight ;)

But to answer your question- it depends.

Are you riding a bunch of hills? What kind of surface are you riding on?

wiiztec 09-27-14 01:00 PM

Nope not unless this is wrong Purchase the Schwinn 700c Road Bike, DSB Dual Sport for less at Walmart.com. Save money. Live better.

And idk quite hilly I guess it depends on the route, I live in attleboro mass and ride all around within a 50 mile radius mostly excluding westward

Some things I forgot to mention in my original post: The tread on my sidewinder tires was relatively slick for a mountain bike, I overinflate them to 80psi when the maximum recommended is 60psi, I weigh about 240lbs

no1mad 09-27-14 01:17 PM

Yeah, that is a typo. I'd guess the weight at 37.5 pounds.

wiiztec 09-27-14 01:25 PM

I really doubt it's that heavy, I picked it up a few time when I first found it yesterday. I can't quite remember how heavy it felt so I'll go back today and see

no1mad 09-27-14 01:39 PM

Well, I doubt it is on the low side of 30. Grab a bath scale and weigh yourself holding the bike and subtract your known weight for a (inaccurate) ballpark.

wiiztec 09-27-14 01:50 PM

Why do you say that it would be inaccuarate? That's what I did for the sidewinder and it gave me 39lbs walmart shpping weight for it said 38lbs. I wouldn't call that inaccurate

Don't assume any part of the 7.5 is correct.

I think these bikes run around 30lb or a few pounds more.

That said, I can see the OP picking up 2 mph.

People get Walmart and IBS Schwinns confused.

They're not in the same league. Far from it.

Darth Lefty 09-27-14 02:07 PM

π faster

Which people? Both these bikes are in the Walmart league. No bike is in the 7.5 lb league.

NormanF 09-27-14 02:37 PM

A dealer quality bike is not going to weigh over 40 lbs.

wiiztec 09-27-14 04:58 PM

I weighed it with a scale that happened to be out of the box and it's 33lbs

From the link you provided in the specs:

Shipping Weight (in pounds): 7.4
As to why I said "inaccurate"- it is because of my own experience. I don't have the best eyesight, so when I was shopping for a new bath scale that I could read, I took three different ones, lined them up side by side, and none of them matched any of the others. So now whenever I need a true reading instead of an estimate, I use the one at the Doc's office (because that thing gets calibrated on a regular basis).

wiiztec 09-27-14 05:20 PM

7.5lbs is what it says on the dual sport's page it says 38lbs on the sidewinder's page

Well it's on the internet so it must be true!!!

Just so you know a pro's road bike weighs 15 lbs. You can buy lighter bikes than that but they cost near to and often over $10,000.

The shipping weight of a low end hybrid, including a box and other packing materials, is unlikely to weigh half of that.

Basically we have now established that the info on the site is indeed in error and that your own rudimentary observation yielded a weight of 30-35 pounds for the Dual Sport.

As to the root question of whether the Dual Sport will allow you to go faster than the Sidewinder? Most likely. Will it be a significant increase? Too many variables for me to hazard a guess.

This thread has huge potential; huge, I tell ya.

OP, just buy that puppy (don't listen to the naysayers on here), all 7.5 lbs of it, slap some Albatross bars on it, and continue routinely riding your 16 to 100 miles/day and you will be flying. I'll bet your 'average speed' gets up near 22/23 mph within a week. Even higher with a few choice upgrades.

This is Bike Forums; anything is possible.

Pretty much the same price as that Schwinn.

Oh maybe you meant nearer to at rather than "near to or over" $10k.

I was just noting you could get sub-15 for a hair over half of $10k

I meant that a 7.5 lb bike for $250 is a pipe dream. The exact price range is irrelevant and I'm not sure why you felt the need to nitpick about it, $5000 is still a long way from what the OP is seemingly looking at.

I don't wanna ride in a more upright position than the mountain bike standard, it'll slow me down and be less of a workout. I'll probably get bar end grips so I'll have another hand position to switch to to help keep my hands from going numb

Yep. No way a dep't store schwinn is less than 20 lbs. I just thought I'd point out the starting cost of sub-15 lb bikes in case the OP had a windfall and decided he wanted one, so much easier to budget for $5k than 10k :)

Now on to the issue of your seemingly always broken quotes... ;)

Is this for strictly for road/MUP use and maybe the occasional grass/dirt shortcut? If so, avoid suspension.
