A newby to the forums here. and a question
I have been riding for the past couple years, after several decades off. I replaced a 25 year old Huffy with a Trek Navigator 1. I want to up grade but kinda in the air as to what to get. I read the magazines and according to them if you don't spend at least a couple of grand, you're buying a toy bike. Any recommendations in the under $600 range for a hybrid bike?

Ignore the magazines- most of 'em are just ad copy nowadays.
Establish a budget and then go test ride everything the LBS has that a) fits you and b) fits your budget- in that order.

if you want new, look for last years models, leftovers, closeouts, scratched and dinged,
some of the big mail order on line stores have great deals now and then,
or get something used but nice, with a little effort you can find a $1000 bike for $600

I own a Novara Forza hybrid from REI.
You can get a lot of bike for your buck there.
Good component mix, and frames made for them by the same factories in Taiwan that make the big company bikes.
The REI house brand, Novara, on a bike is one you can trust.
They also carry name brands like, Cannondale, Diamond Back, and Scott.
They have over a dozen models in your price range on their website.

welcome to the forum. Check out the hybrid forum. Stay away from box stores and sporting goods stores. Go to your local bicycle stores, tell them what you are looking for, what your budget is, and test ride the bikes they have in that catagory....buy the one that fits you and you enjoy riding. It does not matter what other folks think of your bike, you are the one who will be riding it.
