Yo from Chicagoland
Hi all,
Started my cycling in a gym around 2010-2011. Quickly realized that a spin class was the fastest way to get a great cardio without killing my knees. Rich, the instructor, kept saying he was going to get me out on a real bike. Well, he left the club and he didn't get me on a real bike, at least not right away.
In 2012, I stopped going to the gym and when it was nice enough out, I took my old Huffy mountain bike out for a spin. Old crusty tires, rusting rims, misaligned brakes and all. A mile one day turned into two the next into five after that. I started playing with Google maps to lay out routes that were at least 5 miles. Then I found a great trail 3/4 mile from my house [Greene Valley] and started using MapMyRide.
I made a deal with myself to get a new bike if I kept riding that beast each week. So, in September 2012, I bought a 2012 25" Trek 7.3 FX with black Shimano PD-A530 pedals. What a difference a good bike makes. Rode 20 miles the first day including a wipeout at mile 2 (uphill front shifting even after bike shop warned me!). 2013 I added a pair of black bar ends (which didn't solve the hand numbness).
I ride primarily for exercise as I have a desk job. Luckily, I work from home so I can sneak an hour ride in during the day, weather permitting. As I've gotten in better shape, the cursing has cut down dramatically during my rides.
Looking forward to using the forums for help on picking bike parts out and starting to do my own maintenance.

Greene Valley. I can get 13-15 miles in about an hour depending on how I loop around. I also occasionally head down to the Cal Sag once in a while via Veterans Memorial Trail.
