Dormant For 37 Years
Hi all. I'm re-entering the cycling world after a long hiatus. I made a modest living as a Schwinn Mechanic in the '70's to pay my way through engineering school. In the last weeks of my mechanic career I bought a new Schwinn Volare from my bike shop employer. I couldn't afford a Paramount. For the next 37 years the Volare mostly sat dormant. Maybe rode it 200 miles. I had a busy career, raised 5 kids and lived in bike-unfriendly places. I was a pretty good 5-10K runner though, and ran for General Electric’s Corporate Team for about 6 years. I now live on the Main Line in Philly and am pleasantly surprised to find the area incredibly bike friendly. Rails to trails everywhere. Lots of high-end shops and cycling clubs. Riders are a common sight. Best of all I can now afford that Paramount, and bought a 1974 P-13 yesterday. It’s hardly been used and still has all the original components except a new set of Clement sew-ups. Even has the original awful vinyl handlebar tape in mint condition. I glad I found the Forum and think it will be a great way to help me get back into cycling!

Welcome to BikeForums, and congratulations on acquiring your 1974 P13-9 Paramount. You'll find lots of Schwinn and Paramount love on the Classic & Vintage subforum here.

Yes, I ride it weekly now that I have so many great trails here in Philly. Are familiar with it? It was such a terrific value when I bought it. It's red with 25 in frame.

Very familiar with the Volare; it was beautifully built by National/Panasonic with Reynolds 531 tubing and lots of gorgeous chrome.
