Introduction - Lightchop
Hi there.
Back in the saddle.
Start off with suggested Q&A:
Where are you from - Northern suburbs of Chicago IL
What do you ride? - Currently have a Trek 8.2 DS hybrid
How long have you been riding? - Only couple years as an adult (am 43 years old now)
As a kid I rode my bike everywhere and loved it. Always thought it would be great to do a long bike trip that would require days of biking. Never did. Moved abroad for 15 years and never touched a bike.
I began running in 2010 to get into shape, and ended up running a marathon (Tokyo) in 2011. Ran the marathon weighing roughly 210 (I am 6'3" and large bones). Trained a bit too quickly for it, and had back problems shortly after the marathon - to the point where my normal runs would hurt - and on one particular run in late 2011, I had to stop 4 miles in and walk home in pain. Fast forward through 4 years of back pain, and various doctor and Physical Therapy & Yoga sessions, I had a microdiscectomy in December 2015 to repair my herniated disc in L4/L5.
In the summer of 2015 (pre-surgery, with terrible back pain) I began riding to try and get back in shape. It slightly helped my physcial fitness, but my back was not improved. Getting off of the bike (as well as just sitting or standing) was excrutiating.
I don't know if a back ever fully recovers, but am stretching daily and feel as though I can at least operate daily without much pain.
Have been reading a bunch on bikeforums.net over the past year and have loved it. Now I might get to contribute!
With running out of the equation, I have set a goal this year (2016) to ride 10 miles per day on average. So 3660 miles (its a leap year 10+ miles!)
Began the year good, rode the first 10 days but was a bit too quick post-surgery and was back in pain so gave it a rest for a month. Most training has been at the gym doing 10-18 miles/day, and we've had enough good weather days in Chicago that I have managed 4 REAL rides on the bike paths (typically 20-30 miles).
Am currently 90 miles behind schedule but heck its barely March.
My personal record is a couple years ago I rode 127 miles in one day (Silver Comet trail in GA) and loved it. A couple of those this year and I'd hope to be able to meet my goal with ease.
