Hello forum!

Started to ride a road bike for about a month or so and today I rode a bike to work for the first time. Took about 50 mins for 12-mile ride. Proud of myself. Feel little lightheaded but should get a rest at work

Glad to join the club!

Hi Kim, welcome to Bike Forums!

Sounds like you did great for the first time out! Don't over do it though, you gotta build yourself up. Just remember, the distance you go, you still have to come back so it's double! I remember the first time I rode my new bike I felt so good I just kept going and going and going.. then my husband reminded me that we had to head back.

I immediately regretted it.. but that was only a thought. I took my time going back and I was okay. Just took it easy.

Anyway, have fun!

Thanks everyone for kind words. Yes, I'm already feeling tired all day today. I should go little easy on my way home.

Side note: this morning a guy drove a minivan really close to me like intimidating me or what. He first stopped right beside me at the stop sign. I kicked off first and then he passed me really close. I kind of yelled at him but that was bit uncomfortable for first day of commute. He was the worst driver I have seen past month or two since I rode a bike on the road.

Happy and safe riding!

Welcome to Bike Forums. 14+ mph isn't bad for your first commute.

You have those kinds of drivers too, I see. When I first started bike commuting I was scared of getting squeezed. Now, I just go with the flow. Not saying to be careless; in fact, the key is just to have situational awareness at all times. We have to be more prepared and ready to act than a cager. For sure my life and safety relies primarily on the rearview mirror. Stay safe out there, and enjoy the ride!

There will always be some jerk that doesn't like cyclists. They don't like the fact that we, as slower movers (compared to a car) are "taking" up space on the road. Some think that we should ride on the sidewalk.

Others like to make fun of the way we dress with our cycling attire.

They will find all kinds of excuses to mess with us, so when they do this, I just ignore them. Yes, it's wrong for them to do this and we should not have to deal with it, but you have to remember that they have a much bigger vehicle that can kill us. They can throw stuff out of the window at us, swerve in front of us and slam on their brakes, tailgate us to make us fear for our lives. A lot of times, what I will do is turn my bike around and go back for about a block. By then they will keep going the direction they were intending to go.

And I am still alive.

Welcome aboard, don't allow the small minded people out on the roads to undermine your riding. Just follow Siu's advice about what to do and enjoy the benefits you are getting from your commutes, and recreational rides as well.

Its great to have you join in with us here, too.

Thanks for the advice. They are helpful. I like the defensive way of thinking.
