Hello From Castle Rock, CO!

Hey guys - I've been lurking here for the last few weeks trying to absorb as much information as I could before deciding to jump in and buy a bike. Today I decided it was time to buy one and I just got back from my first bike ride - my first once since I was about 8 years old to be honest.

A little about myself - I'm 34 and morbidly obese. My 4 year old son loves to ride his bike around, but because he is so young, he can't really "explore" per se, so he is super limited to just a few hundred yards around the house and cul de sac. I figured I needed to get out and do stuff with him, and try to lose some weight simultaneously, so why not get a bike as well?

My hope is not to become super healthy, although that would be nice. Just to get out of "imminent heart attack" range would be my goal for now. Also, more importantly, is to get my son out and around the neighborhood and town on his bike with me and try to see the areas around us that we didn't even know existed. Castle Rock is a beautiful town, and there are nooks and crannies everywhere. I remember when I was a kid there was no area of my hometown that I didn't know about, and I want to give my son that same opportunity.

Anyone have any advice or recommendations for someone getting into bikes for the first time in so long? I already figured out my first one on my 2 mile ride today: I need to consume a LOT more water than I thought I would (a single water bottle is NOT enough). I also probably need to get a better pair of shoes than just my sneakers as my dogs are killing me now. I was concerned that my seat was going to make long rides rough on my ample sized posterior, but surprisingly, that held up better than my calves and arms did.

Great to meet you all! Hope to get to know you all better!

I already know of the place, from a friend into Firesign Theater. Morbidly is an oxymoron, it's guaranteed but then again I can't grow chin hair to get a job as Santa myself.

If you would like a group appellation and a forum to hang out with like minded folks, look up Clydesdales or their other halves the Athenas. Weight loss and getting in shape are a major (I had to avoid using other words ) part of our site.

Welcome aboard the BF family, lots of folks here that are using cycling to loose weight, or to maintain a healthy weight level. And, many of us ride with our children, its a great means of staying connected with them. Nothing more to recommend, the above advice is spot on to start you off, stick around and find the forums that best suit your riding needs.

Welcome, from up north in Westminster. I'm jealous of your location - Castle Rock is a favorite. What a gorgeous area. Your son is so lucky that you're willing to make this change for him. Awesome for both of you. Water is great - the hydration packs are amazing. I've got a 100 oz one, even though my rides are only usually 20-30 miles. Also, when you guys go out on longer rides (over 45 mins or so), consider taking an energy bar or gel - or even a light sandwich or banana or something. Getting fatigued and "behind" on nutrition sucks. Kind of like when taking advil - you don't want to get to the point where you feel you need it. Good luck!!

Welcome to Bike Forums. Many folks on here lost weight and got healthy by riding a bike. Check in with the folks in the Clydesdales/Athenas forum for help and suggestions. Good luck.

Welcome! As someone already mentioned, you'll find lots of info/support/insight in the Clydesdale/Athena subforum. Great folks hang out in there.

For in-person fun, check out 6202Cycling.org -- They do family rides on Thursday nights during most of the year (right now it's Cyclocross practice at Rhyolite park -- you should still head over there with the boy and tool around the park). Good folks there, too...

Get out and keep riding, this crazy weather won't last long!
