Hi from Malta

Hi all,

Steve from Malta (EU) here.

I'm a long time cyclist, on and off since childhood. I've always had mountain bikes and have just started restoring an old commuter bike my dad had in the garage.

Cheers!

All sorts are popular here but unfortunately we've got a terrible cycling infrastructure. Cycling is very much seen as a sport or a hobby and not a means of commuting, so for instance some county routes are promoted to tourists, but you have to drive there by car! Malta is only 28 miles by 11 so it's a bit ridiculous..

There are some dedicated racers who train regularly and get good results internationally, also triathletes. Most people run around on MTB because the road surfaces are usually crap and there are some nice off road routes.

As we're seeing more foreigners settle here from countries where cycling commuting is normal, there are more road/commuter bikes, pedelecs, folding bikes etc.

I use a MTB for all purposes but want something easier to commute with as it's impossible to find a do-all bicycle. For e.g. to use my MTB for commuting I've had to add mudguards, stand & lights which bug me off road. Then for commuting the SPDs are a pain as it means I have to cycle to work in the Shimanos with my office shoes in a bag.

Hence the commuter project bike.
