Newbie from So.Cal (South Bay Area)

Hello everyone, I am a newbie looking to familiarize myself with the bike community. I currently do not own a bike, but am looking to purchase one. Look forward to this new journey.

Thanks BikeForums

Thank you all for the greetings.

I have my eyes fixed on a Specialized Sirrus Comp Carbon, Alibi, and or Diverge.

I believe these are considered hybrids,

I am looking for a bike I can do intermediate rides with, as well as something that is comfortable taking to the gym, or to the grocery store, etc etc.

I feel that the dedicated road bikes might be a little too aggressive for the grocery getting.

Thoughts?>

Welcome to the forums!

What is intermediate for you? I used to commute on a flatbar bike and by 10kms my wrists started to complain, so I added bar ends and that certainly helped as I sometimes rode 40-50kms on that bike. It can be done, but it isn't as comfortable as drop bars, IMHO.

The Sirrus is a good entry bike though.

Funny - when I first read this, I thought, "South Bay Area... well, that's hardly So.Cal." But then it occurred to me that you probably meant the area of South Bay in LA. So welcome to the forums from another So.Cal person.

One thing about "dedicated road bikes" - there's a bit of difference between a dedicated race bike and a dedicated road bike. You'd probably find that something in the sport touring style would work for your needs. A number of manufacturers have a few sportive models which would be along those lines (slightly longer wheelbase, easier to get the handlebar higher, etc.). For the errands you describe, you might want to look for a bike with eyelets for attaching racks. If you're still figuring out exactly what you want, there's a lot of bikes that meet these requirements on the used market (and for considerably less than a comparable new bike). Swing over to the Classic & Vintage forum, and people will be happy to guide you.
