Greetings

I could have sworn I had an account here years ago, anyway, getting back into this a little bit, and thought I'd look here for tips, advice and general discussion. Currently in Italy, and wishing I was back in the states, but, here for work for awhile.

Hi and welcome, I gave up the car for 4 years in 2010. I had been trying to reduce my dependency upon it for sometime before but always found myself taking the easy option, when it was raining I would take the car if I didn't feel like cycling I would take the car etc... The crunch came when I couldn't afford to repair the car once and that made me make the decision to remove the car from the equation and sell it for parts. At first being car free was a little bit of a challenge having to allow more time to do things. Journeys that would take 1/2 an hour to do in the car would take sometimes 2 hours. But once I got used to it and began to utilise public transport alongside cycling things started becoming the new normal. I lived car free until my mother got sick and I realised that when she needed me to visit, I couldn't say I will be there 4 hours later. So I bought a small car to fix this problem. I quickly fell back into being a car user again. All of this was when I was living in U.K. In 2018 I moved to New Zealand for 6 months out of every year until this pandemic stopped me returning to U.K. this year. I do my local shop by bike and as many journeys as I can by bike but using a bike for an everyday mode of transport here is not really as easy as other countries because of the topology of the countryside and the fact that the cities / towns are so far away.
Have a look in your area for Bicycle User Groups and utility cyclist and try and get their opinion of how you could reduce your car use.
