New to the forum

My wife and I brought our high school grad to Ft. Benning to join the Army. We were advised at the gate that his squad had been disciplined and we could not enter the base for 4 hours. Back at the motel I turned on the TV and the Tour de France was on. These guys ride 120 miles today, 160 miles tomorrow and then ride up a mountain? Whoa! This was 1989 or so. Greg LeMond won so maybe I've got the year wrong. "I've got to give this sport a try", I said so bought a Centurion and have been riding since. Hadn't made it to the Tour but still having fun. I coached the local YMCA girls and boys cycling team for three years in the early to mid 90s. In '95, I bought a steel frame bike under the Giordana name and have been riding it since. It's an alloy frame and weighs 21 pounds without me and water bottles, In '95, I did the ride across Florida sponsored by the SpaceCoast Freewheerlers Cycling Club. I believe it's still an annual one day event and crosses the state from the Titusville area to some little town of the west coast of Florida. My club averaged 19.2. Too long in the saddle. Haven't been back for that ride since.
Now ride with some old timers like me (be 81 this April) in a gated community where traffic is almost nil and, if they run you over, they know who's gonna sue. We do 20 miles a day but for Sunday's day off and average around 17 mph with intervals to 24-25 when feeling frisky and the wind is coming from the right direction or we're in our grandson's draft!
Joining the forum to learn new cycling tricks for old timers and ways for upscale my old bike to avoid buying a new $10,000 composite.
My name is Mike and I'm in Palm City, Florida.
