Alive and well in St. Pete
Hi. I'm Tom -- new to the forum. I've been riding for 3 years in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater FL area on a Roadmaster 18 speed in all types of weather and, yes, I ride 90% on the sidewalks because otherwise, around here it is simply too dangerous to ride in the road...........I started to ride out of necessity but now I think I will never own a car again. Hello to all and please be safe out there!

Welcome to BikeForums.
Riding on the sidewalk is illegal in most if not all states. It's also just as dangerous as riding in traffic.
Maybe you should take a BikeEd class and learn the skills needed to ride in traffic.
Why not contact an LCI (League Cycling Instructor) in the Tampa/St. Pete area and find out where and when the next class will be held?

Welcome to the forum.. There are a lot of members from the Tampa/ST Pete area..
It's a great place for any info you need.
You need to ride where you are most comfortable as long as you are not endangering pedestrians...

Hi Tom! Welcome to the forum.
Yep....on what bab said. I live in Clearwater. There are many others here too. In fact...we have enough in Tampabay area, maybe we should get a gathering together one day or something.

Hi, Tom. I'm a bit north of you in Pasco county (the county where the drivers are so bad many folks opt for the 'Sunshine State' license plate instead of the 'Pasco County' license plate ). I hear what you're saying about the roads. Luckily, the Florida Bicycle Association has a summary of the bicycle riding laws here:
https://www.floridabicycle.org/rights/laws.html
According to them, it's perfectly legal to ride on the sidewalk--you just have to follow all pedestrian laws and give the pedestrians right of way. I am not saying it's better (I pretty much stick to bike paths, so I am not qualified to judge), but it is legal. And I don't know about St Pete, but up here pedestrians are few and far between...

To dagna: Thanks, I've read the FL statutes in its entirety and it pertains to the entire state; however, certain cities may enact their own laws, but as of yet, none in Pinellas county have..........To King Termite: Let's see if we can get some people together informally first, then see where it goes??

To KingTermite: I'm very new to bikeforums, I only found out about it when I needed to find out about my particular bike.........but I think there might be alot of "regular" riders in and around St. Pete that might be interested in being part of something that doesn't require membership dues or anything more financial than owning a bike.....let me know what you think.....

Hi Tomcryar,
I am another St Pete rider. I commute from 1st and 72nd ave to 22av and 23rd st. Other than a few of the intersections, I have a pretty good ride. We do not have showers at work so I need to use the public bathroom for changing. Other than that, I enjoy the commute.

To donham: you do the best you can...............you try to shedule your appointments around how long it takes you to get from one place to another. given the heat in FL right now, you have to go at least an hour before you have to be there
