Retro Bicycling Magazine ads

Hello all : ) Looking for an ad featured in Bicycling Magazine circa late 70's ~ 80's. It was for an accessory or something. Featured a blonde in short jeans with her hands on a handlebar. Ad itself was about 1/4 page in upper right corner. Best mail-order stuff I got was a mirror (Mirrycle maybe) and Specialized tires for my Panasonic.Memory lane ya know. Many thanks!

PS: Multiple image searches show nothing. The ad itself had a grungy feel to it. May have been for cushioned handle grips or something, but not known.

Guess the ad I found wasn't the one you were looking for (it got deleted)

Wheeze. Furthermore, the ad in question featured the following characteristics: (1) No backdrop scenery, or nothing extravagant. (2) It was a closeup with bike facing camera at a slight angle. (3) Featured one girl, one bicycle with hands on handlebars. (4) It was between late 70's and early 80's. (4) It was, at most a 1/4 page ad. (5) She had a curly hairdo. (6) Had dark spots under the eyes (hence the grunge feel). (and 7) G-Rated

I've got a small collection of Bicycling magazine issues from that period, and have mostly scanned them. Not finding anything that fits this description, and don't recall anything similar to it. Just for the sake of ??? , let me at least throw out some that may be memorable, but don't fit the description.

Probably not these, but I had fun looking through some old scans.

Many thanks, but not the ones. Searched everywhere. It was a semi-close-up.

I also remember getting a back wheel rack and a water bottle (both Specialized products I believe) via mail-order. The rack mounted above the back wheel and was very sleek in design. The water bottle mounted on mid-frame with an easy release, much akin to the old flip top Grolsch beer bottles. All 80's stuff. Good times. Looking for era ads only. Unable to find Bicycling Magazine full scans; PDF's.

two things...

1st: I recommend using the "quote" button when responding to someone. This lets you be specific about what your post refers to, and will prompt the poster to check your reply.

2nd: I've never heard of any sort of archive of bike magazines online. I put all of my stuff up on Flickr. I try to include tags to help people (including myself) find articles pertaining to bike brands or activities, etc. It's fairly rare that I'll bother tagging what ads are on each page, and certainly don't get into the general sort of criteria that you've specified. @speedoflight has posted a lot of scanned bike magazines to the CV forum. He tends to just post the main articles, and doesn't try to post the entire issue. I don't recall him ever mentioning that he keeps them in some online archive.

You might try contacting a large library to see if they have access to some archive of magazines. Decades ago, when I was in college, the school library would keep archives in the stacks or on microfiche. It was amazing to be able to handle magazines from the early 1900's!

No biggie. Been forever last time I was on a thread site. Sorta reminds me of the old BBS (Bulletin Board Service). Just throwing it out there hoping to get lucky. Next adventure (not on this): Finding a pic of that old pocket transistor radio . . yeah!

(PS) Thank you for your advice. Took my 10 minutes to figure out how to get a profile pic up, but can't decide. Yet . .

The OP contacted me by PM two days ago and gave me some preliminary info of what he could recall about the ad. I told him it wasn't much to go on and that I'd try to track it down within 7 days. In the meantime, he's provided BF C&V additional info in this thread that makes me certain I've seen the ad that he wants. I've found a couple of ads that it might be, but neither is the one I'm thinking about. I should be able to declare success or failure within the next 2 days. Yeah, I'm not aware of any online archive of bike magazines either. And for my time, I'll expect him to provide us with the whole story about why he wants to find this ad so much. I love a good hunt and a good story.

Not a ruckus. Just want to be entertained. I suspect we all chase down an old memory now and then, I know I do.
So why is this ad an old memory worth capturing?

'cause I remember it. I also remember Milk Shake candy bars and P.B. Crisps and lime popsicles. Guess everyone needs a hobby. Wow I feel like I'm being interrogated by those guys from E.T. (Elliott!) There's your entertainment : )

For some reason I can't explain, this thread has me thinking of Crescent bikes . . . .

This was one case where I did include the Crescent tag in my flickr files, 'cause I knew that it was "culturally significant". ...at least for me.

from the July 1975 issue of Bicycling, and probably quite a few other issues of that era.

Many of us who are of a certain age recall that Crescent ad. Oh, those Swedes.

The above ad photos remind me of a poster in our locker room when I was a young policeman. The higher ups had decided there were too many broken marriages on our 500+ person department. The posters were placed in all the district locker rooms, and were of varying designs. Ours was the picture of a beautiful young woman in a two piece bikini, with the words "Remember, somewhere there is someone who's tired of her ****".

Probably saved a few marriages
