Oregonian checking in

I'm from Bend, Oregon. I found this site through a search engine while doing some research on bicycling--something I haven't done in about 10 years. I have two reasons for wanting to get back into cycling.

1. Gas prices are getting pretty high, and...
2. I'm fat.

I'm going back to school starting in January, and am looking for a bike that will be a good commuter in general. I'm not sure if I'll end up getting the typical road bike with the drop bars or a "commuter" bike, such as the Trek 7500fx. I like the thought of having one bike to commute with AND take some long road rides on my day off, which would be much more in the realm of a true "road" bike, I'm thinking. Anyway, I'm just beginning the research and have much to think about.

Welcome.
There are plenty of opinions and experiences here on the forums about the search for a bike. I got help here when I was looking. One of the most important things is the fit. If it don't feel good don't do it.
Here's a site which may give you a couple ideas.
