From the heart of DC

There are actually some of us who just live in Washington--no government stuff, no politics. Anyway, I have been reading the Forum for a bunch of months (especially the 50+ because I am a 50+++) while getting back into riding again. Got a Specialized Crossroads in June and have put about 3,000 miles on it, which has convinced me I need a bit more bicycle. However, yesterday the Crossroads and I did our first century up the Washington & Old Dominion Trail in the teeth of a 20+ mile an hour headwind. Ever notice that when the wind is in your face you really feel it but when it's at your back you don't notice. So getting that 100 in motivated me to post an intro--I had to brag to someone. I love to solo ride on my own schedule, but reading the Forum makes me think that I ought to hook up with a club for some group rides.

Welcome from another non-gov, non-pol.

If you want to try out a local club, Potomac Pedlars is very active. https://www.bikepptc.org/

Even off season, they run quite a few rides.
Regular winter training rides out fo Belle Haven Saturday mornings.
There is also a ride this Sunday morning from the Vienna Community Center to Purcellville on the W&OD..... but you just did that.

Welcome. Another DC person here, but I must admit that I work for the government though the agency I work for is in Alexandria.
Congrats on the century. I'm 28 and I have yet to do that. I've told myself that would be the goal for two summers now and I have yet to do it. I've gotten up to 80 miles on a couple of occasions. I might try to do a century on New Year's by just riding in circles at Haines Point with the Potomac Peddler's. Definitely impressive doing a century on a windy day like that.

Welcome. If you put 3,000 on that bike 4.5 months, you are doing some serious riding. The Crossroads is a nice all-purpose bike but you might want to move up to a regular road model now. Once you get used to the road position, you find it wasy and quicker to cover the same miles.

Congratulations on the century too. I started out with the goal of doing 40 that day and gave up at half the distance due to the wind.

I am beginning to shop for a bike more in keeping with the sort of riding I like to do. I am not sure these old bones are up to a full road bike, but I have been looking at a Jamis Coda and a couple of other serious hybrids. A couple of folks recommended that I look at cyclocross bikes also.

I think the day I rode the century and you stopped--you were the smart one.

My commute is 14 miles each way--urban, hills, and bike path. City Bikes is good, as are most of the shops around. I'm partial to Proteus in College Park and City Bikes. Capitol Hill Bikes also seems good, but I've only been in once.
