Hello from North Carolina
Hello, I thought I'd put my introduction out there. Joined recently because of all the great info on this site. Great job guys and gals! I bought my first road bike last year to ride in a local MS ride. Hooked ever since. Started off with a Trek 1200 as my first bike. Very nice bike. Put about 1000 miles on it with no issues at all. Now, I'm more into the long rides and at 37, I'm finding that anything over 50 miles is a pain in, well, just about everywhere. I decided to upgrade. Yesterday bought a nice, new Trek Pilot 5.0. Took it out today for 50 miles. Wow, what a great bike! I've read on here some people consider them an "old man's" bike. So be it. My main goal is to ride at a good pace, have fun and not need a doctor when I finish the century that I just finished. I think this bike is a good step in that direction.
Thanks for listening and hope to see some of my fellow NC folks on the road!

Have fun with your "old mans bike" and welcome to the forums.
Of course, your old man's bike weighs less and in all likelyhood performs better than most bikes the pros were on in the 80s

It is light. Just hope it's not fragile. I can be clumsy.

Hello
I guess I am an "old man". I am going to be 54 soon, and have put 3,500 miles on this Trek Pilot 5.2 in the last 9 months. It is a great bike. I did a pair of century rides within 2 weeks, and both were very comfortable. I am not fast (about 16 MPH on a century), but certainly am having a good time.
The changes I have made to the bike are:
swapped 12-25 cassette for a 12-27 to go with the triple crank up front
upgraded the wheels to Bontrager Race X Lites
upgraded the tires to Continental GP4000 with the light tubes
upgraded the bar tape to Bontrager isogel
had a professional fit (that was really great)
I am currently training for the Summit to Surf up Mt. Hood outside Portland, OR. The upgrades to the bike have been made with the climb to 6,000 ft in mind.

Welcome to BF.
OLD??? Explain what this "old" thing is that you're referring to.
I'm 61 and cycling keeps me young. Most days I feel 35.

What a sweet bike. I've seen a lot of people upgrade the wheels to the one's you're talking about. Seems like a good upgrade. I like the Bontrager Race Lite tires though that came on mine. Only thing I didn't care for is the brakes. Came with Cane Creek. I've heard nothing but bad things about everything they make. But we'll see.
3,500 miles. Wow. I'll be lucky to get that many in 3 years. My wife and I are planning on doing our first century in August. One of the reasons I got the Pilot. I'd be happy myself If I could average 16 MPH on a century. We're getting about 14 now. We've got a long way to go, but we'll have fun getting there.
Good luck on that Mt. Hood ride. That looks awesome! We have a mountains to sea ride here that I'd like to do next year, but we'll see.....

I think I'm opposite from you. I'm 37 and feel 61. I'm hoping that the new bike will help with that. Lost about 15 lbs from 195 to 180 so I'm hoping this helps also. It's all in how you feel....

Interesting that you mentioned the brakes on your Pilot. I bought a Trek Pilot 2.1 and rode it for 6 months. It was my first road bike in about 25 years. I thought it was very good. As I rode more, I found the vibration from roads paved with chip seal to be very uncomfortable. So I went to my LBS with the intent to try a Pilot 5.0 to test the carbon fiber frame. They didn't have a 5.0 in my size, but they had a 5.2. My LBS is really great, and they let me take it for a 40 mile test ride. On my first miles, I was amazed how much crisper the Ultegra shifting was that the 105. And I really noticed the brakes. The Ultegra long reach brakes on the 5.2 were a huge improvement (even more so if you put Kool-Stop brake pads in them). I finally made it to the chip seal, and yes, an all carbon frame soaks up road vibration more than an aluminum frame with carbon fork and seat stays.
Based on that test ride, I sold the 2.1 on Craig's list and bought the 5.2 when the LBS had their yearly Trek sale. I am really glad I did it.

We road on a chip seal this past weekend for about 30 miles and I was as comfortable as could be. My wife on the other hand was constantly complaining. She's got a Fuji with the carbon stays and fork, but aluminum frame. So glad I got the 5.0 verses the 2.1. I was going in for the 2.1... One ride did it though. A world better than the 1200 that I just sold on Craig's list. That thing made an old man out of me...

Welcome to the forums. I am also from NC, around Winston-Salem. Ride over to GSO with some frequency on NC 150 through Kernersville and Summerfield really a pretty ride.
