Howdy from north of Toronto

Quick intro: I live in Newmarket, just north of Toronto. It's a suburban setting, to be sure, but there are some great roads east and west of town - scenic and very rideable. I've finally taken the leap and purchased a road bike. My mountain bike (a Thin Blue Line "Ozone Pro" 1998 from Silent Sports) is jealous sharing the space, but he'll still get his action. My new road bike is a Lemond Tourmalet (2006) that I bought at Spoke-o-Motion here in town. I love it. The thing screams RIDE ME every time I look at it.

The roads east of town are generally of the gently rolling variety; the roads west tend to involve more billygoating because you're riding up and down a more dramatic part of the Oak Ridges moraine. I've been doing more of the western loops because I live in the southwest part of town. I'm an active 40-something professional as well as being a weekend hiker and birder (not kidding), hockey player, guitarist and singer, music buff, avid reader, and sports fan (mainly hockey, baseball and football).

When I lived in Toronto in the 70s, I used to ride up Weston rd to Holland Marsh, which is near you. However much of the beautiful countryside around there seems to be swallowed by the urban sprawl.

Hi Andrew,

Weston Road is still excellent (no sprawl has touched it) and the Holland Marsh still has great flats for spinning. The Yonge St. corridor has all the suburban fungus.
