Ni Hao from China
My husband and I are currently living in Shenzhen, China where my husband teaches economics at an international school. He commutes ten kilometres each way every day on his Dahon TR Speed and loves it. I usually accompany him in the mornings and return home on my own. Although Chinese traffic looks totally chaotic it is wonderful fun to ride in and it feels much safer than riding in Australia.
We are from Australia and became interested in cycling and cycle touring about 7 years ago. Since then we have ridden in Australia, France, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and China. Most of these rides were done on mountain bikes. In January we visited Thailand for a second time, this time with our new Dahon folders. They were great - no questions asked and no extra fees on two planes, two trains and six buses!!!
This summer we are heading for Switzerland - again with the Dahons - and plan to ride from Geneva to Munich along some of the famous bike trails. We also plan to catch a couple of days of the Tour around Morzine.
We also own two Giant roadbikes in Australia.

Ni hao!
Yours is a fascinating story! My husband and I have been to Shenzhen once, as well as Beijing (7 times for me, 9 for him), and various other places in PRChina. Women ai Zhong Guo -- but never once considered riding a bike there... of course, we haven't ridden here (stateside) in 20+ years, either.
I agree that Chinese traffic looks far more chaotic than it evidently is -- one sees FAR fewer motor vehicle accidents there than in California! And I have only seen ONE involving a bicyclist in the whole seven visits.
I'm here on this forum in preparation for obtaining "folders" for the two of us. Looking at just commuting, errands, and a little weekend recreation (with an increase in fitness and a decrease in weight!) -- for the time being... but your stories of traveling with your bicycles may have planted seeds for the future!
