Hi from the Hurricane Coast!
Greetings from sunny Florida, aka "The Hurricane Coast."
I just got my first "real" bike, meaning, it fits and everything. It is a very, very basic Jamis Explorer, which suits me fine since I'm upgrading from MomBike 1.0, the purple unispeed with a big baby seat in the back (OK, look, the "baby" is 13 so I'm a little bit of a procrastinator, all right?) Anyway, I read and read on this forum and decided that I did in fact wish to go to a LBS rather than, say, Wally-world or the local pawn shop. I told my new best friend Clyde at the Palm Bay Bicycle Shop the following: "I want to get fit and have fun. I have back trouble and I'm overweight. I ride on mostly paved roads but there are some dirt roads in the area I want to explore. In the fall I will commute 5.6 miles to college classes. Oh. And I'm cheap." Hence, the Jamis. So far I am very pleased with the bike, I went a little over five miles today (out of shape and recup-ing from a nasty sinus infection.) It was sheer joy--relatively cool, very little traffic, I live in a rural area so I peddled past goats and horses and didn't encounter any dogs. I always LOOOVED riding my bike as a kid, so I figured "hmmm...." I was right! It's still fun!
Thanks to everyone whose brain I picked while lurking. Definitely the right move to go to the bike shop because they did fit the bike for me and they put it together so it is "just my size."

Hi Nancy. Welcome to BF.
Good choice.
I'm sorry, but I have to take offense to that remark.
My commuter is a Jamis Nova (see pics in my sig) and it's an awesome bike.
