DC Newbie

I'm Mike and I roll in DC Critical Mass. I met a tight group of fun bike enthusiasts who led me here. I love seeing so many people ride in the city.

I came up in car-centric suburban Laurel, MD. The bus there debuted in my youth and there has been a railroad station for 150 years or so, but otherwise it was a car-centric upbringing. I got a bike in the spring of 2001 to do errands in my smaller town with because I was hating to burn gas more and more. I also wanted the fun of riding that I'd once had til I was driving age, and I was being inspired by seeing so many Central American adults commuting on their bikes near my neighborhood. I've no problem running around car-bunched suburban roads, where driver's need to see bikes most. I wear my helmet becasue I promised Jenka and Carol that one night that I would, and it's worth it!

But now I'm in DC, closer to "work". Can you believe I found the cheapest rent for 4 adults, 3 cats and one dog inside of this most income-disparaged, over-priced city? I commute within an easier town now and I see so many people on bikes -a most practical method to get around. I go out of my way to make it to DC Critical Mass every month and have been falling in love with the ride and the community forged from it. It must only grow and be as fun as possible! I rock it with a boombox, hence my name. The DC Bike Pirates held the Mass together through the last winter and have been fun to hang with, so I followed those friends here.

This should be fun.
-Mike

Welcome. There are lots of commuters in and around DC--a few weeks ago I was bored and counted over 120 on my way to work. I commute from Prince Georges to Alexandria. I won't ruin your welcome with a tirade against CM; suffice it to say that I won't see you there, but I hope to see you riding in town.

I won't hate you for your perspective

Hater of Critical Mass, eh? Chances are good I've heard the reasons why before, as every ride I've been on includes a little debate and conversation on how to improve -usually how to be more appealing. I'd like you to open the can of worms you just showed me. I understand that it's possible to make points without cutting on someone viewing from a different perspective. I know quite a bit about PG County, we can talk about that too. Are you coming from around Hyattsville, Capital Hieghts or Oxon Hill towards Alexandria?

You like hip hop? I'm living hip hop many times. "Your thoughts are always welcome, I seldom

Won't endure another's perspective.." -Mr. Lif, I Phantom

I'm not a Hater of anything. I don't agree with CM tactics is all, but if you're into it, that's great!

I'm from close-in, Hyattsville-MR area. I like jazz, particulary Brazilian.

Good riding to you!
