yet another new girl on the block!
hey everyone! :]
i'm glad to have found what seems like a very active and friendly forum for cycling enthusists!
my name is katelyn; i'm a 20 year old dietetics student from livonia, michigan (20 minutes east of detroit if that helps). i reside in kalamazoo during the schoolyear to attend western michigan university. i love animals, particularly dogs. like ... a lot. haha. i've spent the last three summers/holiday seasons working at a kennel here at home. i'm a vegetarian. i love backpacking and hiking and hardcore camping (no toilets, no coolers, no cars, sometimes no tents ...).
... i guess you could say i'm one of those earthy-crunchy-granola-tree-hugger types ;]
anyway! on to the good stuff. as my signature says, i'm currently on a 14" raleigh 4.0 passage. i bought it in may with the intention of using it to get to my chemistry class at a local community college, but the idea of riding 12+ miles a day in rush hour traffic and over expressway ramps made my poor mother all flustered with worry, so i ended up using my car (boo). but then i became more and more interested in my new bike and bike culture itself. so here i am :]
i completed my first triathalon with this bike in june (29 miles cycling in addition to 6 miles kayaking and 7 miles jogging).
i'd reeeaaaally love to have a nice racer, but funds are pretty tight these days. so perhaps as a combination birthday-christmas-i'll-pay-for-half-of-it present? xD we'll see, i guess.

Hi Katelyn, welcome to BikeForums, you sound like one of my kids. Both girls are on their last class for a master's. One is a backpacker and the other is a kayaker. Last year, every other weekend, we chased the Huron River and the other weekend we went up north to the Pine River, AuSauble and the Betsie Rivers. In September I have to meet my 26 year old for a hardcore backpacking trip at Yosemite. I live in Novi, so I surely know where you live. When I woke up this morning, there were two empty cans of tuna that my 25 year old daughter left for me to rinse out. Ever since they went to U of M, I'm stuck recycling and buying expensive organic junk. Hope to see you around. Debbie
BTW have you checked out the Kal-Haven Rail Trail. I usually cycle on roads, but that is a nice trail.

I live near detroit myself, I'm also 20, and coincidentaly, my brother will be going to western this fall. I also love deep woods camping, buts thats where the similarities end. I take guns with me into the woods and kill cute little animals for the eating
In any case, welcome.

Hi ushi-sama,
Im another person from Michigan also. I live in Ann Arbor, and work at the U of M. Like you, I also love camping, but I am definatly not hard core. Even though im always by myself, I have a 4 person tent with screen porch, a cot, chair, table, big coleman grill, the works. A lot of times I end up camping in the back of my VW, half way through the night. I am a bug magnet. Bugs dont give me the jeebees, but they always bite me all over, and the bite marks swell up. Frustrating.
Anyways, good to see more people from Michigan on here.

i am planning on riding the kal-haven trail with some backpacking buddies once i get back to school, actually. the only bike that i've ever had up there until now was a crappy huffy "mountain" bike ... you know, the shoddy department store type. total lemon. hopefully my hybrid is up to the task -- it sounds like a great ride!

I should also suggest the Kal Haven. I've ridden it on the Michigander tour a couple times. I don't care what bike you have, go check it out. Its a really nice trail.

yes, i am also a major bug magnet. people enjoy sitting outside with me because mosquitos will generally leave them alone and swarm all over me :/
try stepping out of that tent once in awhile, buddy! :] the best camping experience that i've ever had involved a tarp strung up between four trees and a sleeping pad and sleeping bag on the ground in february in tennessee. hardly any bugs, plenty of fresh air ;]
