The Next Step

Hi, I live about 30 west of Chicago and have recently dedicated myself to more biking for fitness and fun. Up to now, my past years amounted to relatively low miles (less than 200) in the the forest preserves.

Just picked up a road bike and joined a local bicycle club this year that allows me to bike more regularly on the roads (something new to me). Also signed up for the 6 day Illnois Great Rivers Ride in September from Rockford to Alton, Illinois along the Mississippi River sponsored by the Illinois Department of Tourism. Looking forward to the challenge ( and the camping as I'm not a camping type of person yet either)and am already contempating longer rides next year. To prepare for the September run I'm biking about 100-200 miles a week with the longest run so far around 80 miles.

I currently have 3 bikes- (1)a Trek XO cyclocross ( I intend to use this one on the September run ), (2) an old Trek 7500 hybrid ( I use this for casual riding because of its weight ), and (3) Trek 5.5 road bike I bought used.

This look's like a great forum for info on this latest passion of mine.

Alton, Illinois could be the start of some much bigger rides. The Race Across AMerica frequently crosses the river there. I remember crossing the bridge in 1988 during RAAM. You could get a copy of the route description and head for San Francisco or Atlantic city or LA . . .
