New Guy from So Cal

Hello all...I just started riding about six weeks ago and think I'm geting the "bug". I find myself wanting to go farther and faster every day even though the reason I started was to just get some exercise. I had to give up jogging because of a knee that thinks it's almost 50...but the rest of me refuses to go along with that notion. I'm riding a 21 speed aluminum mountain bike by NEXT. I don't know much about the brands yet but it seems to be good enough for what I'm doing right now. It's not entry level but it's no Trek either.

I'm just doing about 10+ miles 4 times a week and a little less another 2, but today I feel the need for some saddle time. I think I'll see how many miles I can get in 90 minutes.

Great switch!

I also had trouble with running (felt pain in my lower back after several miles). Switched to mountain biking, and have never looked back!
Started at 5 miles/day 5 years ago. I'm up to 27 miles/day today and I've lost 39 lbs.
Started with a DiamondBack XR1. Still have it, and still ride it every now and then.
Later, switched to a Titus Moto-Lite (Titanium). Awesome bike!
I really love both bikes! I find that they each have their strong points.
One, thing that happened to me when I started increasing the distance, and since I do a lot of hill climbing, was I began to feel some pain in my tendons that wrap under my heel. I was riding in basketball shoes most of the time, and my Dr. told me that I needed to invest in some serious cycling shoes to prevent repeatitive stress injury. So, I got a pair of Specialized BG shoes. They work great and give my feet the support I need. The pain is gone and I'm still riding.
Jon Sinabaldi - 91 years old, lives in Florida (so no hills), but is still riding 30 miles/day on his road bike. Hope to live as long and still be riding my mountain bikes!
Keep riding!

Welcome. Don't sweat your bike. Some people will say Trek is worse than entry-level anyway.

Welcome! In addition to the subforums organized by cycling discipline, be sure to check out the SoCal regional subforum for discussions among an active and friendly group of cyclists in the SoCal area.
