Old guy back on a bike

Hi all:
I'm in Ottawa ON. I'm not a competitive rider but I've always loved being on two wheels. For three years in the early 90's I commuted 20K per day to work and on weekends rode with my kids. Life took me too far from work to ride. I'm close enough now, I think, 25k each way.
Of course I want a new bike. My old ride is a 15 year old hybrid.
The choices available are bewildering! Internal hubs look good, so do shaft drives and the derailleurs look very nice too. And what kind of frame? Road? Hybrid? Touring?
Its too late this year, late autumn in Ottawa is unstable at best.
So, I'd be happy to hear some advice and personal experiences.

I'm not familiar with the term, "old guy". I'm only 61 so you'll have to pardon me.

Have you considered a cyclocross frame? That's what my commuter bike is.

I have had great fun cycling in and around Ottawa. Look at cyclo-cross or light touring - they will fit larger tires than a road bike + rack, fenders. If they are beyond your budget search or ask bike shops for used.

Nothin wrong with vintage, but if you really want a newer bike, and at a good price, ebay is a great option.

Well I finally did it! There's been a lot of twists and turns, including losing my job. I have a better job now and I closer to work! I have a 15k communte almost all along the Rideau Canal bikepath. Some mornings are so lovely I just want to stop and take some pictures. Here's my new bike
I've added fenders and a rack and Wellgo dual sided pedals.

That was some mulling and pondering you did, aubinmg! Now you'll have to post some photos in the Commuting forum .

Welcome (back) to BF!

You are only old when you allow regrets to take the place of dreams. Sounds like you're a long ways off from there.
