Nash-Vegas, Baby!

Moved to Nashville, TN about a year ago. All the people riding here made me remember my standard-issue blue Schwinn ten-speed from junior high. My four-mile (one way) commute to college seems like an aweful waste of gas, and a waste of a good fitness opportunity. This may be the wrong time of year to start commuting, but hey, everything else will seem easy by comparison.

I'm enamored of the simplicity of fixed or single-speed, and I'm searching shops for a good LBS relationship, as I'm actually anti-mechanical, i.e.-stuff breaks worse when I try to repair it.

I'm 30, engaged, and my fiance thinks it'd be a good idea for us to ride together, as she was very active on her bike up until she moved out here too. We were thinking of riding together for a while, then looking at a tandem in a year or so.

So the ride wil be commuting, with an eye toward eventual light/weekend credit-card touring. She's an experienced camper. I'm, uh, not.

Commuting through the winter by bike is OK, if there is a bus service you can use on the snowy days. You can always dress up for the cold. Do you have a bike for commuting yet? What are you doing at college?

Still working on a bike. Was really thinking another fixie, but I wan't tires that aren't rock hard, and since I weigh 235#, and my school bag is ~30#, I'm thinking I'd really rather be riding 700x35c or even 38c tires at 80-90 psi than 23mm or 25mm at 110psi.
Fenders and at least one rack would be nice, too.
I dunno....'Cross frame? Everything's just so darned expensive!

I'm taking a program in Classics, plus minors in English, History, and Philosophy. Plan to graduate in May '09. Gotta start thinking about some kind of grad school. Hard to raise/support a fmily these days without it.
