Hello, road bicycler from NJ

Hello, I've been flipping through the topics on this board and they look pretty interesting and potantially useful! I'm starting up riding again after a summer off (had an accident last summer that kept me out of riding). I tend to go for low-impact rides locally on side roads, maybe for an a hour or so. I use a road bike with mountain tires that was assembled from a kit.

I initially came here to find advice about getting a new saddle, but it seems I'll need to form my own opinion. Has anyone been able to buy a saddle locally and return it for another one until you find the right saddle?

Hello Neil, yes, saddles are highly individual .

Good luck in getting one that fits you properly--it'll happen eventually. In the meantime, there are many Jerseyites here on the board, so stop by the regional forums and say hello!

Welcome to BF!

Some shops will allow a trial period. I found one that does, but I have a good relationship with them, and I'm not sure if this is typical.

Thanks! Just bring my bike into the shop yesterday and found a saddle that seemed decent. I'll know more when I try it installed after pick9ing up the bike (getting a tuneup). Thanks for the kind words.

Give it some miles (around 50 or so), and about a week just in case, but I know at least one saddle I've gotten was perfect right away, and I knew it.

Thanks for the kind words! The new saddle feels pretty good, but yeah, I'm gonna give it a week or so to see how I like it. The only problem is that it turns a little from side to side, but that's an installation issue, not the seat itself.

Since I didn't buy this bike (my Dad won it in a contest, true story) I'm not exactly sure what kind of bike this is. The frame says "BCA USA", "Glacier18", and I just notices that near the bottom it also says "Shimano ride light". Did some searching and found the company's website.

The bike shop guy told me it's a very nice mountain bike (I wasn;t sure if it was a mountain boke or a road bike with mountain tires), and he seemed pretty on the level. But the welding seems a little sloppy.

(That's my wife's bike in the background. I'm trying to convince her to ride more!)

Next step is installing the reflectors I have and getting some sort of saddlebag.

Urr. Looking at the pics, I need to clean it off!

Hi neilfein-

Not familiar with that brand of bicycle, so I'll have to let others chime-in to help. Secondly, don't bother installing the reflectors. Plastic relectors are a waste of weight and they only do a mediocre job. There are MUCH better ways to ride safe and make you noticeable out on the streets. Superior methods are lightweight, battery-powered LED blinkies and reflective tape. Keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up!

I already have reflectors (just found them), so I'll use them until I can get something better. I'll look into reflective tape, though.

Edit: I emailed the company to ask if this is one of their bikes.
