Hello From Kingston, New York

Hi fellas. I just happened to stumble on this place yesterday in an effort to find a good bike forum. Looks like I found the right place? I've been riding for just over 3 years now after a very long hiatus over 20+ yrs. I used to ride alot as a kid but no serious stuff. My wife bought me a Trek hybrid at least 5 years ago. It pretty much sat in the garage the first couple years except for a few times I ventured out on it. I know a real sin! I finally decided either I was going to start to use the darn thing or seriously consider selling it. Well I got back on the bike and after a very humbling beggining, I've been hooked ever since. I started out riding rail trials getting my legs back and pretty much switched exclusively to road riding the past year or so. I was for the most part riding 25 miles on Sundays last year. This year with a goal of riding a charity ride of 50 miles, I have decided to jack things up. The past month I've increased my rides to 30 miles and upwards to 45 miles depending how I feel. Looks like I should meet my goal in September no problem. I'm not what you call a hardcore. I only ride on Wednesdays and Sundays. I workout at a local gym 4 days a week weight training which I've done for the past 20 years. No plans on cutting back on my workouts in favor of riding. I really enjoy it. I look forward to participating on the forum. I'm probably going to be more of a lurker than a contributer at first. Hopefully when I do add some thoughts I wont sound too stupid. Afterall, I'm still trying to figure these things out. Thanks and apologies for the long intro.

Hello Tom, that was a great introduction, no need to apologise . It's too bad it took you almost five years to get back to enjoying the riding, but at least you're back. Does your wife ride as well?

Check out the Northeast regional forum if you want to get an idea of who else is in your neighbourhood.

Welcome to BF!

Thanks for the welcome East Hill. No my wife doesn't ride, although she claims she wants to get back riding and since she has a bike also in the garage just sitting there.

You can lead a horse to water...perhaps when your wife sees how much you are enjoying yourself she will start back up again. I know it took me a while to coax my husband onto a bike, and it's still difficult to pry him off his Trek MTB and get him to ride his beautiful 1980 Schwinn LeTour.

Oh, what's the charity ride?

East Hill, the last 2 years one of the local hospitals has sponsered a charity ride for cancer. Participants can ride 10, 25 or 50 miles. I thought about riding last year but I spent a good part of the summer working some serious overtime and felt there might be better opportunities in the future to participate. As of right now, I'm not certain if there will be a ride this year or not? Even if there isn't the goal remains to complete a 50 mile ride. I have complete confidence I'll be able to achieve that goal either way.

Yes, a fifty mile ride is not that much actually. I have just gotten back from riding a 10 speed Raleigh mixte 41 miles . But it's always nice to ride for charity. Not only can you get in a good ride, but to be able to help people--that's always cool.
