Hi, I'm a noob. Am I in the right place?

Looks like it.

I'm Kevin, a 26 year old police officer from Spanish Fork, UT (just south of Provo). I'm getting back into mountain biking after several years away. When I was younger, my oldest brother and I biked quite a bit, mostly up in Seattle. Every summer I'd stay with him for a few weeks and we'd hit the trails about every other day. All of my 4 other brothers bike a bit also and we're mostly a split Specialized/Gary Fisher family, except the oldest who has a Kona (he makes the most money too, go fig; but he started with a Rockhopper years ago)

After high school, I fell off the wagon until recently, when my wife decided I needed a hobby. And since I'm a cop, I figured a hobby that promoted fitness would be most appropriate. I'm not much for running and hanging out at the gym so I thought I'd resurrect my enjoyment of biking.

I bought my first bike about a month ago. It's a Gary Fisher Piranha, and I'm super happy with it. Havent' upgraded a lot except for the peddles, and added the basics like water bottle/cage, Serfas HL-1, Blackburn Mars 3.0, Serfas seat wedgie, and Specialized Speedzone Comp computer.

My wife is now starting to think it looks like fun, so it won't be long before we get her something too. Her brother and dad also bike. And as soon as another bike patrol class becomes available, I can start getting paid to ride.

So I just thought I'd say hi and introduce myself!

Welcome, Kevin. We've got some excellent bike cops here in Portland. It's a great form of community policing. I hope it all goes smoothly for you.
"Real wars of words are harder to win. They require thought, insight, precision, articulation, knowledge, and experience. They require the humility to admit when you are wrong. They recognize that the dialectic is not about making us look at you, but about us all looking together for the truth."

Welcome to Bike Forums.

I learned one manuever from a video on a bike patrol class. When making slow tight turns apply both brakes and keep pedaling. This helps me to perform trackstands at stop signs too.
