Getting Back on the Saddle

Ok, I haven't ridden in like 13 years and back then I was BMXing. Now I just want to ride back and forth to work and and then with the family and on occasion light duty xc and trail riding. I am attempting to get my whole family cycling. Going to get some kid bikes for my 2 1/2 year old and 4 year but for myself I am not sure what bike I should get. I kind of was looking around at target but then I go look at reviews I read bad reviews. I am not a hardcore cyclist nor do I intend to become one. But I understand you get what you pay for, but I don't want to spend a lot nor do I want it to break down or have an issue in a month after purchase. So basically I am a newb. Should I still hit up a bike shop instead of target? And how the hell do you tell the difference between the diff types of bikes. Is what I am looking for a cross country mountain bike or a trail riding mountain bike? Wow, this was a long intro. Well, basically I am getting back into riding and it's been so long I don't know where to start. I might take a trip or two to some bike shops and see what they say. I'm in San Diego if anyone knows which of the bike shops are good or if they are all good please let me know.

Hey Rama, visit your local bike shops and see what fits you, first. What kind of a budget are you aiming for? There are deals to be found on Craigslist, and perhaps garage sales.

For what you're looking for, if you don't ever intend on becoming a hardcore cyclist, something from Target may very well do just fine, you just need to be aware that you may have issues with things not being put on the bike properly.

What size are you looking for, do you know?

Welcome to BF!

Tough question for me! I would ask that in the Mountain Biking forum, though. Study the stickies (although it sounds as if you have done so already), then ask.

I have an old school MTB, none of this new-fangled stuff for me .
