new guy from SE PA.

I'm looking forward to the camaraderie of this forum. I bike-commute to work. Alas, I am the only one at my work location (about 100 people) and I know that connecting with other commuters here I will get the encouragement that I am not getting from those I work with who are not riding to work......yet.

Hello hchbiker, what kind of bike are you riding?

Go ahead, post some photos of your rig in the Commuter Bicycle Photos thread :D :

Hi there hchbiker -- I'm from SE PA too, about an hour or so northwest of Philly. I'd love to be able to commute to work on my bike, but sadly it's not safe or practical for me where I am now. Maybe someday.

hchbiker 08-27-07 03:29 PM

Hey Lynnio,
Sorry to hear you can't make it happen with the current situation.
The company I work for certainly has no made it easy for me to ride.
I hope that you can find a way in the not so distant future to bike commute.
There is a course offered by the League of american bicyclists ( in this area by a guy named Ed Hein) on bike riding that I found helpful when it came to dealing with commuter traffic. If you havn't taken it you might want to consider doing so.
Good Luck!
Do you belong to a club?

As a born-and-raised Allentown-ian, please allow me to add: Welcome to BF!

I don't belong to a local club yet -- but I might join in the future. My local club is Berks County Bicycle Club.

Thanks for the welcome

Hey Njm,
Thanks!
Allentown-ian? Do you ever get time to go over to the velodrome?
I have gone there to see races and also to the flea market.

Hey hcbiker - you are not alone! There are many BikeForum members who also bike to work. We are in the vast minority in the workplace for sure. I guess that's what makes us special. :D

Welcome to BikeForums from a fellow Keystoner!

I have gone to the Velodrome once or twice to see bicycle races when I was much younger -- very exciting! Have you ever been to the Bob Rodale Bicycling Park that's across the street from there? It's a short loop, and is often a bit crowded, but is very pleasant.

I now live elsewhere for school, and nowadays I appreciate how nice it would be to have a closed, smoothly paved bicycle path to ride around on....

Hi Bac,
Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I know that we are in the minority. Have you seen the story in the news today? Americans are getting even heavier, 20% obese. Biking is not the answer for everybody but how many people can bike to work and don't....I work with people who could walk to work but drive?!?!?!?
Just a pet peeve of mine.

Let another SE PA rider - Phoenixville area - weigh in with a welcome. PM me if you'd like to meet for a ride. I bike commute from time to time, but the 35 mile round trip wears me out.

hchbiker 08-28-07 12:15 PM

Neil, We've met

Hi Neil,
You and I were both in Ed Hein's class this past Spring. Since then I have written to you a few times to check in your biking progress. I'll e-mail you seprately.

Historian,

I checked out you blog and I'm not far from you. I know the Royersford main street climb well. I live on the Limerick side of Royersford. Small world.

If you want to get together for a ride, I'm more than willing, however my schedule is a little odd, weekday mornings are best for me. If you're up for it maybe I can juggle some things and be more available.

Hello and welcome from another PAer! I'm in Lancaster County... just over the Chester County line.
Enjoy the forums!
