New Member, new rider (again)

Hi all, knotty in San Francisco. Been riding from age six and seriously from age 22. Used to do all the local criteriums and road races in the SF Bay Area in the 1970's on my all Campy Masi Gran Criterium. The era of Greg Lemond, George Mount.

After quitting racing about 1980, still rode a lot and did weekend 100+ milers into Marin County as far north to places like Bodega Bay, Jenner on the Russian River, Point Reyes, Olema for a good number of years.

In 1991, bought a Schwinn Paramount MTB which I rode until 1995 when very unfortunately, the work schedule got too busy and I quit riding.

Two months ago, after not riding for 12 years, I got the MTB out, completely lubed it, got new tubes and tires, and began riding again. Yes, it was complete with sore butt, aching shoulders, back, lungs felt half the size and wiped out in 4 miles, but I plugged on doing 5-6 easy miles daily.

Well, today, I'm up to 40 mile rides again and hope to do the Marin rides again soon. Maybe not as fast as the racing days but hopefully, distance wise. Would like to get another road bike but when it comes to the latest bike equipment, I'm totally lost, the equipment has changed so much and seems the prices have doubled. My day it was the ten speed and downtube shifters, now they talk about 27+ speeds and 17 pound bikes. I have so much to catch up on, don't even know the terminology any more.

Hopefully, I can learn enough here to help me buy another road bike.

Hello knotty, nothing wrong with that Paramount MTB, you just need to get a Schwinn Paramount road bike to go along with it.

There are a lot of vintage aficionados here who will tell you that it's not really necessary to leave behind the DT shifters, but if you want a newer year road bike, well, just check out the stickies in the Road Cycling forum and you should have gained a fair amount of knowledge . Depends on the budget, you know?

Don't forget to check out the Northern California regional forum--there are vast numbers of BG members down there, dying to get you out on a friendly ride .

Welcome to BF!

Hi East Hill, thanks for the welcome and tips. Yes, I had several bikes years back, one was a chromed Paramount road bike but I traded it. I will start looking for a new road bike soon. The MTB is fine and has many thousands of miles on it but I really miss the sleek road bike again for especially the distance rides.
