I've been in Atlanta for a few years and am thinking about getting a bike for recreation and possibly commuting.

I'd appreciate any advice or tips on biking in atlanta or just what kind of bik eI should be looking at

Hi beralde. What part of Atl are you in?
If you need a bike, stop by the shop I work at (Intown Bicycles - 1035 Monroe Dr.) and I'll give you some tips and hopefully get you on a bike you'll like.
I'm also a cycling instructor (with the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign) and bike a commuter so can give you some pointers and bike maps to help you plan a good route.
Why not introduce yourself in the Atl thread in the Southeast subforum.

Biking in Atlanta

I personally ride a mountain bike with slicks and I pull a Bob Yak trailer when commuting in Atlanta. This serves me well for grocery shopping and even long commutes. I find that I am a lot more visible when pulling the Yak and also get a lot of sympathetic as well as admirable looks from motorist. I guess I will really get over with them when I put a sign on the trailer stating - "My Doctor is making me do it"
When I'm not on the mountain bike I am riding with either a group or in StoneMountain park doing laps. I find that the Atlanta motorist is not as bike friendly as a lot of other big cities or states that I have riden before.
I would recommend a cyclecross or a mountain bike to commute. Reason is that you are not completely limited to the road.
Welcome to Atlanta and hope to see you on the road.
