Hello from Ann Arbor, MI

I've been riding to school since I got my big green Schwinn Corvette with the chrome fenders and front mousetrap carrier (for my tenor saxophone). I learned a lot about winter biking while going to school at SUNY in Buffalo, NY, and learned that weather is all relative when I moved to Fresno for 6 months. People there didn't bike in February cause it was too cold, but thought biking in July at 105 F was fine! I biked to school at CWRU in Cleveland for a couple years, then got a job in Detroit and started driving to work :>( For the last 13 years I've been living in Ann Arbor and biking to Washtenaw Community College where I teach electronics. I've got a really lovely 5 mile ride along the Huron River (and an alternate ugly and dangerous but quick 3 mile route on main roads). I've had to learn winter biking all over here cause we get really nasty ice in the winter that I never had in Buffalo. The studded front tire that I put on when it's icy has saved my life several times I'm sure. I'm on the Environmental Committee at the college and am always looking for ways to promote bicycle commuting. I just learned about this forum from Marc at Wheels in Motion. That's my blue Giant Innova with the big blue bags at the bike rack in the photo.

Greetings from another Ann Arborite. I tend to only ride on the roads in the winter (or any time), and I find them to be ice free most of the time. You might try riding on the streets to avoid icy paths when the temperature drops below freezing.

Hello dpetty, obviously you are a bike commuter--are you also car free?

Welcome to BF!

I've been to Ann Arbor for work more than I care to remember. I hate that place. I know of no where else with a drive through for parking tickets. Dirty basstards.

All my negativity aside, welcome to bike forums!
