Intro

Hi. As suggested, I am writing a brief intro.

My name is Doug, and I'm a bikaholic.

I am 42 years old, live in metro Philly. I am a roadie. I rode a TON in the mid to late 80's, almost none in the 90's and have picked the habit back up in the past couple of years. I used to race cat IV but now am just riding club/fitness rides.

My bike is vintage, circa 1986. It's steel, custom built by Fred Kelly of Alpine Cycles (he is out of the business now, so probably no one knows him anymore), with all 1980's components. The only components I have updated are the tires. On club rides, other riders wonder why I keep reaching down! (its to shift, I have down-tube shifters).

Anyway I would be pleased to hear from other riders. My current dilemma is whether to upgrade this 21 year old frame with 15K miles on it versus get a new frame. Since funds are limited right now, I will continue to ride it as is for the time being.

Hello Doug, as a happy member of the Classic & Vintage forum, naturally I will have to tell you to keep on using that nice bike . Soooo...if you could perhaps show us some photos over at C & V we will gladly offer our opinions. Trust me, there's at least one or two people who will remember Fred Kelly.

Welcome to BF!

Welcome to Bike Forums!! I'd sure love to see what your bikes look like. Do you have pics you can post?

Thanks for making me feel welcome. By the way is there an online "chat room" here so we can communicate with each other in real time?

No, Foo is the closest thing--but it's almost always happening in real time!

Thank you Siu! I did not know that such a thing existed (but Foo is still probably more fun ). My new thing to learn for the day!

The best thing to do is to create an account with an image hosting site like Photobucket or Imageshack and upload the photos there. You should compress the photo's first as it will take too long too view the pictures in the threads in the forums. You will then link from the image on that host site and paste the link in your post.

I always compress (around 100kb and resize (800x600) my images. If you bought a digital camera you may have some image software with it.

Hope that helps.

Did you try hosting them first? Try photobucket.

My Bike

OK I think I figured out how to compress my picture. Here it is. A 1986 Fred Kelly Alpine. Its been repainted so no decals (I like the look). Columbus SP down tube, SLX seat tubes and chainstays, and SL seatstays and top tube. The seat tube is 63 cm, the top tube is 56.5 cm....for my long legs and short torso. Everything on the bike is vintage mid-to-late 80's (note the avocet cyclometer) except the tires.

I hope this works!

Oh, big bike!

Yeah, it's easier to see details of the bikes if you don't use the thumbnail version. And those of us in C & V are serious about our bike photos, I'm just warning you .

There's this evil person in C & V who is always demanding photos and you must watch out for her.

Look out for East Hill....

no account at photobucket, I can look into it....I downloaded picasa to compress the pics I have from 2 Mb down to <100 Kb. You can still click on the thumbnail and see the "full size" picture right?

Photobucket is incredibly easy, I think even my mum could do it.

Good job on compressing, looks good.
