Guess I should intorduce myself

Hi everybody, I have been away from cycling for about 18 years now and am making a comeback. I am in the process fo restoring/updating my 1983-84 Gitane GranTour. I am not going off the deep end or anything on the restore side. I gave it a decent rattlecan paint job and am in the process of putting it back together with all new components, it really needed it since it was in storage for the last 18 years so it is getting new everything except the frame and fork. Anyways just wanted to say Hi and merry Christmas to everybody!

Hello chief! Welcome back to the world of two wheeled fun. Your heart, lungs and legs will thank you. Good luck on that rebuild. I'm guessing a Gitane during the early 80's still had a lot of French specific components, which means you can't fit other non-French parts. Right? I'm curious about the details and what you're able to upgrade. Since 1997 I owned what I can only guess was a Gitane. I say guess because it had been repianted at some point and there was no badging or markings. It did have the same geometry and components of a quality mid 70's French made, non Peugeot bike - Huret, Stronglight, Mafac, Normandy. So it was either Gitane or Mercier. Or an equivalent. I too had plans for a nice restoration, but then it was stolen in July of this year. I'm riding a new Raleigh, which I've come to like very much. If you're in need of vintage French components or info on tech details, look up Sheldon Brown's website where he includes a section of vintage French bikes. And Merry Christmas to you!

Thanks all, I got lucky on this one.. My Gitane is new enough that all of the components are ISO standard so I don't have to do the quest for all of the French specific parts. I am still active duty for another 2 years and then I get to retire. I lucked out on that one also as I am on shore duty for my final tour so my ship riding days are over..
